Problems bulk erasing two inch reel to reel tapes.
I have a good Radio Shack high powered video/audio bulk eraser. I have tried using it on numerous occassions to bulk erase a couple of two inch reel to reel tapes. It doesn't seem to do much. I was told that because the two inch reel to reel tape is on those thicker metal reels, the bulk eraser can't work. I have also tried using my smaller Hand O Mag tape head demagnitizer but that has failed as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We used to have a monster "dim the lights" when in use eraser we used for 2" Quad Video tape..and audio as well I think. I can see the thing in my mind but can't find a picture of it. mind you this was way way way back when.
This thing had a turn-table/hub that you sat the reel on..and then proceeded to spin the real around during erasure. Not much help though, sorry!

My bulk erasing problem has been solved. I must have not realized it at the time but I finally did. There are probably other solutions but this one works just fine. Here is what I did.
-arm all 24 tracks -press play and record- -keep all imput volumes at zero. -Use 15 ips or 30 ips speed. 30 ips worked fine at took about 20 minutes to run though. -On the Tascam ATR 80- I didn't need to have all the XLR inputs connected. I just so happened that I had on two connected. MY TAPE ERASED JUST FINE AND NOW IT IS JUST A NICE BLANK. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE RADIO SHACK BULK ERASER I BOUGHT ON EBAY. I AM SURE IT WORKS WITH PLASTIC REELS OR SMALLER SIZE TAPES, BUT IT WAS OF NO USE TO ME ON THE 2 INCH TAPES. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP.

Scott.......The nonferrous metal reels are not the issue with the hand held demagnetizer. It was designed with enough magnetic flux energy to penetrate up to 1/2" magnetic tape. The hand held demagnetize is not a strong enough electromagnet to penetrate 2 inch reels of densely packed iron oxide. That's why the photo above shows a much larger electromagnet incased in the box.
