Myles....Great review! I am currently looking at the Opus3 catalogue & have been chatting with the Australian distributor today. Apparently, there is renewed interest & your article may have something to do with that.
The distributor should have some more info for me next week. It is probably time I introduced myself at the Melbourne Audio Club.... |

On this topic, does anyone know where things are at with The Tape Project? Is it still alive & well? From here, things seemed to have gone quiet....

I just read the Opus 3 article and am intrigued as they detail some of the audio benefits presented on tape recordings. It was a million years ago that I owned a Reel to Reel and am excitedly looking into getting one again. A friend of mine is giving me his Pioneer RT-707 reel to reel which seems to have been a widely sold and owned piece of equipment. It is not a top of the line recorder but I can't beat the price. I find very little in the way of an audio review of the unit itself. Maybe one of you can answer a few questions:
How is the overall audio quality of open faced tape recording and playback compared to CD and Vinyl? The read from this article makes the Opus 3 recording titled "One" seem very attractive, however, at $250.00 or so for a 30 minute sampler, seems a bit pricey. Anyone have first hand knowledge with this? Finally, anyone experienced with the Pioneer RT-707 that would care to offer a review? thanks for your input. Larry Sent from my iPad using A.Aficionado |

Rt-707
Larry,
The RT-707 is a highly regarded machine by the members of Tape Heads, but I don't think it will fulfill your needs. It is limited to 7" reels, 1/4 and speeds of 7.5 and 3.73 inches per second. Most of the reference tapes are recorded on 10.5" reels on 1/2 track machines @ 15IPS, many of which require IEC (European EQ) vs NAB EQ. You might want to look around for a used Otari 5050BIII which will more than meet your needs. There are others on the used market that will work quite nicely, but you want to make sure the unit can operate at a minimum of 7.5 or 15IPS. The reason I suggested Otari is because it's a direct drive machine with no belts to go bad. Good luck and I hope this helps. Bob |

Many thanks Bob for taking the time to respond. That is the first definitive comment I've received on what is where reference level taping can be found. I have recently joined Tape Heads and see there are enthusiasts but the group seems to operate at some difference in terms of "High End" discussions than AA does. I now own the RT-707 (did not even power it up, just sent directly for cleanup, analysis, and alignment) and will get back in the groove with it and determine if spending more for Reel to Reel will be warranted later. Thanks again. Larry Sent from my iPad using A.Aficionado |
