I believe that Audio Research still has metal replacement covers? I asked for one when I still owned the Ref 5SE preamplifier. I still have the lexan one in storage.

Yes warped not melted. My mistake. The Lexan/Perspex covers are a stupid addition, they don't add anything to the sound of the preamp except make it cheaper for ARC. The former ARC tech of Australia said that the steel perforated tops are better as they act like a Faraday cage.

When we ran tests, even in Australia, it sounded best with no cover, then the acrylic one, then the metal one.

That is disappointing. As long as ARC has been making preamps someone in design should know better. Sounds like someone new, I know in my corporate life as soon as we got a new marketing person they made a package change!

I did hear a difference when I changed the black tube dampers to Herbie's tube dampers. |

I also heard no discernible difference when changing form Lexan to metal. I don't seem to have the same warping issue with the Ref 10? I remember years ago they recommended no cover if the room was free of children and curious individuals wanting to touch the board!

I've similar problem on my Ref 6, but the problem is the power on button . I have problem to switch on my Ref 6 after using it for 2 weeks - I bought a brand new Ref 6. I couldn't switch it on by both remote controller and power on/ off button on the front panel. It is not happened every time, sometime it has no problem for a few days, but sometime this problem comes out for the whole week, or random. What I need to do is to plug out the power cable off the wall , wait or a minute then plug it back to the wall. In this case I can switch on my Ref 6. I return my Ref 6 to the seller and they will replace a new one to me later. Some of my friends who are familiar with DIY audio equipment said perhaps there are some component on the front panel are out of work. What a bad luck for me…..
