Default MQA Discussion

Hi Folks,

Some people have asked about MQA and our thoughts on it.

Please feel free to comment on your thoughts about MQA.

I think its important that we get both sides of the story.

James
You guys have been sitting on the fence too long on MQA. The downloads available prior to Tidal finally opening the floodgates this week did little to generate much excitement. Those of us who are MQA compatible are hearing some of the best digital sound to date. On the four sites I have been following the releases on the 5th there are many doubters who have become converts. Nothing in this hobby is accepted by everyone.

How this plays out?

I was hoping you would be telling us the good news, that you have a firmware update this next week for our BDA-3's. Lol!

Hi

No not ready to commit yet - there are just too many unanswered questions and there appears to be a real polarizing aspect to the debate.

Resistance is futile. I think the polarization is due to lack of access. I think that is changing now thanks to Tidal!

If Bryston decides to offer MQA, would it be as simple as a firmware upgrade or would there be a hardware requirement?

Hi

From what I understand from the engineering guys - software. But as a company I can not see us endorsing it.

Thank you for helping to protect both the industry as well as consumers. I, for one, detest the idea of manipulating PCM, DSD or other codec for the purpose of making a digital file smaller. Storage is not an issue, and I have yet to hear a Total composition sound better than the sound of music I imported as .aiff files from music I own. Nothing on Tidal approached the sound of my imported music played back on MPD on my Bryston BDP-3 using USB flash drive. Why would I want to manipulate an unadulterated recording? The bottom line is MQA is a monopoly over sound for short sited consumers and capitalist offering a product we don't need. Moreover, I have enough discernment to understand marketing. For me, its like a form of another damn Divx.

Software (I am assuming in the BDP) could get the first level unfolding of MQA but any computer running the desktop Tidal app can do that. The full unfolding and authentication would require a DAC to be designed and licensed for MQA.

This is probably why Bryston is not interested.

Similar case for HDCD.
