jwc....I have not as yet played external drives or outside sources (PC, etc) through it as yet. I'm just getting my feet wet and I'm also working some other projects. Since I have a McIntosh MDA1000 and a Bryston BUC-1, this will likely remain my vehicle for playing my hi-res music files from my laptop. I will likely try it out just for grins and giggles at some point however....

wadeh911....it's not that I wouldn't like to expand into the world of multichannel. It's really because my main system's room configuration simply won't allow it. The bulk of my equipment, and the structure that it all resides on and in, dominates the main wall of the living room. To properly set up the system for multichannel (home theater/surround) the TV monitor must be placed between the main (front) speakers, and this simply cannot be done. That's just one of those limitations that I live with. The HDTV resides perpendicular to the system and speakers.

Then of course there is the cost and complexity that such a conversion would involve.

The same limitations apply to my office and Florida room systems, where the TV screen location is the biggest limiting factor. The only exception is my bedroom system. In that system, the TV resides front and center, between the speakers-ideal for a home theater rig. So it would be theoretically possible to convert that system, though it would still be rather involved.

I've been into multi-channel nearly as long as two channel. I began with the David Hafler surround scheme BITD, had every iteration along the way, and today enjoy Atmos in my listening space (it's awesome). So why then do I listen mostly to two channel via LP or CD? Simple - that's what relaxes me the most.

I love multi-channel. But after all these years, 2-channel is still where it's at for me.

damacman....I hear ya. I am really content staying with 2 channel. I too have owned Hafler gear....I still have my DH-500 Amplifier, which is currently in retirement. It was and is a great amp that served me well off and on for many years, in more than one system.

I picked up a used OPPO 105D. Bought from a forum member here.

This is a great deal. Great remote, responds well, and solid feeling unit. It like a super smart computer.

The sound is surprisingly great. I knew it would be good but not this good.

In the upcoming weeks, I want to see how well an external music drive works with it and how well the menu system navigates.

Congrats Pete. I've been curious about Oppo for years. I have a bit of a non-audiophile question. Does Oppo state what their Blu-ray support policy is when the standard is updated every couple years? Something that has annoyed me over the last decade is when a player after about three or four years no longer can play some of the latest movie releases. I was an early adopter of Blu-ray and have found myself needing to buy 3 players since it came out.

I don't know what they state, but I know that they update via Internet download from time to time. I have three Oppos - an 83SE, a 95, and a 103. All three are up to date, and that's including the 83SE which is several years old.

Look at the McIntosh thread on firmware updates and you will see Oppo cited often as an example of a manufacturer that knows how to keep products current.
