Default 3 D Projector Thread

With the new OPPO 93 and 95 blu ray players coming out with 3 D capability I have been thinking about the possibility of going to a 3 D projector if the technology develops where you don't need to use proprietary glasses. My video switching is done through my MX120 now however if I went 3 D I would need either a special scaler that was capable of passing 3 D and 2 D signals from the different sources (Xbox, cable box, blu ray etc.) or I might have to run a second HDMI cable ? I currently have a 30 foot HDMI cable going from my MX120 to my projector however I was wondering if anyone knows if the new 3 D format requires a special type of HDMI cable ?

My Lumagen scaler already has the update available to process 3-D; the G90 will handle it as well, although I have no interest in it.

The cable remains the same.

3D from a Blu-Ray player requires HDMI Hi Speed cables according to my TV's owners manual.

If all of your gear DirecrTv Box/Projector, Recevier/Pre Pro, and TV can all send and receive 3D signals you are probably ok with a 1.3 cable if not you will need some 1.4.

There is some conflicting info out there and some of the original blue-ray machines had two HDMI connections one audio for older pre-pros or receivers and the second for the video signal to connect to your TV/Projector.

The following might help but there are other conflicting statements too.

Do I Really Need HDMI 1.4 to Watch 3D HDTV and Blu-ray 3D?: BigPictureBigSound

The Holy Grail of 3D. Manufacturers all have to produce 3D products these days but until the glasses are gone, 3D will not achieve widespread market penetration. Well except for the only market that doesn't seem to mind the glasses - gaming.

I go to 3D movies with the Grandkids and I have a 3D TV (it also has the best 2D picture). The 3D glasses at the theater and at home both easily fit over my glasses and are not an issue.

Would 3D TV be better without the glasses? Sure , but Home Theater would be better without all the cables for 6 or 8 speakers too. I will take the hassle of glasses over cables any day.

I'm glad you enjoy 3D and I was in no way implying you shouldn't. I'm simply making observations as both a consumer and a manufacturer.

We see all kinds of interest in 3D because the press tells consumers they need it. So far we are not seeing the demand that supposedly should exist and the glasses are named as the #1 impediment, even before lack of source material.

'World's first' glasses-free 3D TV hits stores in Japan

"Many in the industry say 3D television demand is being held back by a consumer resistance to wearing glasses and most shoppers Wednesday were curious but also cautious about the new Toshiba device."

Again I'm not saying it isn't enjoyable or that for some the glasses are not an impediment. But if you want to see a sales and software explosion wait until the technology that eliminates them.

I don't mind the 3D glasses. My wife complained but has finally seemed to make friends with them.

I really do prefer a good 3D image over 2D.

More than glasses-free, for now, I think universal, non-proprietary glasses would help. The cost of the glasses needs to come down also, and it would be nice to see passive glasses -- again as cost containment and to get away from the battery issue.

Still, I like my 3D TV. Avatar on 3D is still the benchmark. The 3D Blu-ray is amazing.

Now, I want a larger screen.

I don't know about 3D taking off. I recently attended a local 3D event utilizing a top-of-the-line Digital Projection Titan 3D projector (retails for 85K) with an expensive processor (forgot the price). I was sitting in the centre, so it's as optimal as possible. 2D to 3D conversion made me really dizzy. Native 3D content was a little better, but I still felt dizzy because of the crosstalk. After the event, my headache and dizziness remained for several hours. Overall, not happy with the 3D setup that retails for more than 100K. Plus, the fan in the projector was really loud.

Until they can get rid of the crosstalk (plasma TV is much better in this regard, but screen is too small), I remain skeptical.

... looks like they were trying too hard. For now, I'm happy enough with the plasma and waiting for the right projector.

Maybe it'll get better in a couple of years. I wouldn't put too much money on such "new" tech right now.
