I recently have started ripping with my Silenzio and all is going well. I have two albums that I downloaded (192 FLAC) but was wondering how to put them on the Silenzio/NAS. Do I need to Identify the Gaps, make a cue sheet? Not sure that would make sense. Maybe just the cue sheet and create a folder for each album, then drag them into my FLAC shortcut folder? Hmm.
Thanks.
Tim

Just create a folder with the same protocol you are using for your rips. I'm assuming you are doing Artist Name - Album Name if you listened to -E-. Just name the folder that way and drop it (drag it) in your FLAC folder. Cover art should come with it as well.

It looks like I will be soon following Ivan's lead and retiring my MS750's since it looks like Gracenote is gone and being able to rip was the main advantage of the MSxxx series. It seems like there are quite a few Silenzio's out there. I have a couple of VortexBox units that look the same, rip and play back using a special USB card and Logitech as a front end. The ripping is not all that accurate so it requires constant attention. The Vortexbox does not have the capacity of a local monitor. It will however let me have 4tb of internal storage and a Synology DS1813+ for external storage. I haven't used Windows in a number of years. The Wyred4Sound music server is built on a Vortexbox / Linux system.

Having said all of that, could I get some feedback on the pros and cons of the various server units with special focus on the Silenzio system to help make a decision. The key factors to me are: one, good quality sound, that is why I had the special USB board installed, and two, ease of ripping CD's, i.e. just insert the disk and the music is added with all info like the MSxxx series used to do.

Thank you for your help and input.

Others will add more but here are a couple of thoughts - using the Silenzio or any PC for that matter, to do your rips will require a few more steps than what you describe for the MS-XXX units. In the other hand, it won't be obsolete in a few years.

Ripping process----

If you use dBPoweramp to do your rips on the Silenzio, there can be only a few steps to the process.

--- Insert CD, run DBPA. After it is done, drag the file from your desktop to your NAS folder. Done. ---

DBPA will create the folder and download the cover art for you. If you create shortcuts on your desktop to your NAS folder, this is very easy. I am not sure if you can configure DBPA to automatically create the folder on your NAS or not... If so, you save one more step. Ripping to your desktop eg. directly to the SSD of the Silenzio is fast and error free however. Sending the rip while ripping through your network might not be as accurate????

-E- will configure DBPA to do all of this. Once it is set, you can forget about it.

Option---

If you use Exact Audio Copy to do your rips, you may arguably get an even cleaner rip but there are more manual steps involved. You need to create the folder, choose the cover art, create the cue sheet, in total use many more 'clicks' of the mouse.

I feel DBPA does just as good a job and is much more automated.

E.......With Windows 7 being used as the operating system for the present iteration of the Silenzio, does the OS continue to receive Microsoft updates? Being connected to the Internet, does the Silenzio require virus protection? When Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7 will the Silenzio be upgradable to Windows 10? Can the Silenzio operate now with Windows 10 in place of Windows 7?

Yes.

Not a bad idea if using for more than just meta pulls.

Yes.

I don't see why not but that is strictly end user at this point. I usually don't endorse or utilize any new M$ product until SP1 is released.

As far as ripping on Silenzio, each client is trained on the workflow. It is quite easy and the result is archive grade. It also eliminates the need to ever to that disc again. Unlike with any closed architecture or garbage-rip environment.

Retire your spinner!

With a single drive it is best to just stick with EAC. You are special as you have the uber 7 drive box... That made the batch ripper add-in that DBPA had practically a necessity.

Special? Why Thank You! I might be blushing!

My response was focused on the method that comes the closest to what a dedicated ripper/server does. Eg insert disc and it does the rest.

No doubt ripping with EAC provides a high fidelity to the CD but it is a multi-step process. DBPA once configured, is only a few steps and I cannot hear any difference from the FLAC files from both rippers.
