The Steve Miller Band at the Chateau Ste Michelle Winery in Woodinville, Washington. The band and Steve Miller were in great shape, performing all the old hits but also doing some great blues with Randy Hansen sitting in on a few songs. The winery is a beautiful outdoor setting, and the weather was perfect.

We drove up to Interlochen to see Brandi Carlile again the other night. She and her group are good live performers. Besides adding the tracks from her most recent album "Bear Creek" they also performed a great cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain".

The opening act was The Lone Bellow. They had enough catchy songs that I ordered their album too.

Last Monday evening we heard Bonnie Raitt at The City Hall, Newcastle. A really wonderful performance from Bonnie and her band.

It is amazing how four people can fill a room with so much energy and intensity, and that is exactly what they did. James Carter opened with a rousing and virtuoso display on Tenor Saxophone, with equally great solos from the others. During the course of the night he featured his Tenor, but also a baritone, soprano and a contra-bass saxophone. First time I ever heard a contra-bass live, and it is quite a magnificent instrument.

It was a great set lasting about 80 minutes. When the band members left the stage, Lonnie remained and did an encore on his...cane. Yes, it turns out his cane is an electronic slapstick thingamajig. He soloed on that as the other band members eventually made their way back to the stage for an extended encore.

After the show Lonnie remained to chat with people and sign autographs, so we went up to meet him. He got the biggest charge out of the fact I have a huge vinyl collection of jazz. When I told him how many 50/60s Blue Note LPs I've collected he got an ear to ear grin on his face. He kept telling Missy he now has to outlive me so he can have it. Seriously, it was so much fun to jest with him.

What a great show. I am really glad I got to attend.

Thanks for sharing this. I love it when the entertainers hang out with the audience like that. Sounds like an awesome gig. Man I was jamming to Dr. Lonnie many moons ago (I think late 70's early 80's), he had a little cross over hit album going on back then. Let me see, get my calculator out to figure out how many years ago that was - 40+...

The live music I was listening to tonight was Paul McCartney, from the center of the 18th row on the floor of Nationals Park in Washington, DC. Just seven or so months shy of the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' first North American show at the DC Armory, Sir Paul and his band entertained us for almost three hours, and played a bevy of Beatles tunes.

Set list: Eight Days a Week, All My Loving, Listen to What the Man Says, Let Me Roll It, Foxy Lady (McCartney lead guitar solo!), Paperback Writer, My Valentine, The Long and Winding Road, Baby, I'm Amazed, I've Just Seen a Face, We Can Work It Out, And I Love Her, Blackbird, Your Mother Should Know, Lady Madonna, All Together Now, Lovely Rita, Eleanor Rigby, For the Benefit of Mr. Kite, Something, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Band on the Run, Back in the USSR, Let It Be, Live and Let Die, Hey, Jude, Day Tripper, Hi Hi Hi, Get Back, Yesterday, Helter Skelter, Carry That Weight.

His voice shows the strains of age, but his persona is the same as it's always been -- humble, charming, playful, respectful. The band was first rate, and clearly enjoyed following his lead. And the audience (mostly aging Boomers, with some young adult children here and there) ate it up.

I still have the two George Benson albums with Lonnie Smith: "The George Benson Cookbook" and "It's Uptown with the George Benson Quartet."

It's the only George Benson albums I listen to.

I'll have to check those two out. Which do recommend first or most?
