Default " For those thinking of traveling the California Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) "

Posted yesterday on Vette forum

For those thinking of traveling the California Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) this spring or summer be aware much of the road remains closed to thru traffic south of Carmel. Doubtful it will even reopen by summer!

The picture below is a recent picture of Mud Creek which had a major slide on Saturday, May 20, 2017, a slide over 5 million cubic yards of material wipeout a large section of Hwy 1.

That's a lot of dirt! Hope no one was hurt.

I'm planning a ride on this highway two years from now. I hope they fix this stretch of PCH soon. The West has seen a lot of issues in the last few years with droughts, fires, and landslides. Three years ago I tried to visit Glacier National Park and couldn't due to smoke. Same with Crater Lake. I actually saw a fire burn on the side of I-5 near Tacoma, WA because of the unusually dry weather in 2015 in an area that is famous for lots of rain.

Daaaaang!!
My son is at school in San Rafael (Marin County) and wife and I were planning to pick him up for the summer and then traveling south on Hwy 1 to Santa Barbara.

I hate Hwy 101.....

What else is new. One of the most beautiful drives is San Diego to Seattle on Highway 1 and 101. They have Hotels the entire trip. Amazing. But parts of California does have a problem with mud slides. May of 2013 the drive from San Fran to Monterey took me six hours because part of the road got washed out past Big Sur during the winter rains . Luckily one lane was open but you had to wait forever for your turn.

I drove on that highway. Pretty, but the hairpin turns and cliffs scared the crap out of me.

That's what makes a road like that fun on two wheels! Just need to pay attention so the scenery doesn't distract and make you run off the road...
