Default We Have No Idea How Bad the US Tick Problem Is

_

" Around the world, diseases spread by ticks are on the rise. Reported cases of Lyme, the most common US tick-borne illness, have quadrupled since the 1990s. Other life-threatening infections like anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever are increasing in incidence even more quickly than Lyme.

Meat allergies caused by tick bites have skyrocketed from a few dozen a decade ago to more than 5,000 in the US alone, according to experts. "

I never even saw the one that gave me Ehrlichiosis several years ago. If I had to make a choice of getting that again or kicking a wasp nest with a bare foot I'd choose the wasp nest. Tick borne illness is no joke.

One of my pharmacy technicians' husband is still getting over Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. He was showing some land to a client north of Atlanta at the beginning of June and saw 3 ticks on his leg. Didn't come down with any symptoms for about 4 days and then it hit. It got so bad she took him to the ER. It took them a day or so to confirm the diagnosis. He had a pretty rough time of it, was on doxycycline for almost 3 weeks and it's now July 8 and he still isn't 100%. He's the third person in our area I've heard of this season to come down with a tick borne illness as well as another patient in our pharmacy with a dog who currently has ehrlichiosis. The AJC (Atlanta Journal) did a story on this topic about 3 weeks ago, apparently it's getting more common in the SE.

OMG!

Isn’t the only way to get these out is to poke them with a hot needle so they back out?

I prefer prevention. During non-winter months, if I am in the woods, permethrin treated clothing is the way to go.

There are several ways to get them to let go, but the important thing is to not rip their mouthparts off.....gotta get the whole thing or your risk of infection goes up.

+1

I have had the UK equivalent, supposedly less harmful, and it messed me up no end...

From Mayo Clinic:

Complications

Without prompt treatment, ehrlichiosis can have serious effects on an otherwise healthy adult or child.

People with weakened immune systems are at an even higher risk of more-serious and potentially life-threatening consequences. Serious complications of untreated infection include:

Kidney failure
Respiratory failure
Heart failure
Seizures
Coma
