Haha I think they have probably done a good job controlling that, actually. But their ring driver just isn't up to the tech of a Stax omega or Focal beryllium driver, and the closed back is just adding on another big challenge. Heck, their ring probably isn't even as high tech as the Sony Qualia 010 that preceded the HD800 by some years.

Who knows, maybe it will be a pleasant surprise but I have my doubts about glass!

I am however really loving the natural wood Ebony cup and the biodynamic cone of the Fostex TH-X00Ebony by Massdrop. Love the bass and midrange on these cans. It just sounds soooo right!

"Last year, in response to the Audiophile Community’s call for a D5000 successor at a comparable price, we teamed up with Fostex to create the TH-X00 series of wood headphones, available exclusively on Massdrop. The final installment in the series, this iteration features the same great-sounding, closed-back design—this time with ebony wood ear cups in place of the original mahogany. Prized for its hardness and density as much as its beauty, ebony makes for a darker aesthetic and a smoother, more refined sound signature."
