I have not heard an unmodded Sonos but the modded one claims reduced or ultra clean low jitter signal. It really is convenient and to me, sounds great into a good dac.

High-end sample rate converter made by TI
Low jitter clock with less than .5ps jitter
Low noise power supply for the clock and SR
Micro processor controller
Input & output digital buffers

John,
I have both, and there is no question the modded unit sounds better. I hear clearer, smoother vocals and get better resolution of individual instruments in orchestral works.

I am running a Mac MCD500 as a DAC. One of the big benefits of the modded unit is that its digital S-P/DIF output is transformer isolated from the rest of the circuitry, keeping a lot of noise out of the system.

Joe, your modded Sonos can do 24/96??? I have 3 Sonos units throughout the house, and while very good via a Bel Canto Dac 2 or Apogee MiniDac, it was always limited to 16/44. I have to look into this! How does it sound as a transport into great dac? Compared to USB out of PC?

Jeff,

I think it sounds excellent. Wyred 4 Sound modifies the digital output to reduce jitter. Are there better implementations out there, possibly. But this is hands down a no brainer and can stream anything you can think of at the touch of a finger. You can point your music collection to it, it up-samples to 24/96 and outputs via toslink or s/pdif (what I am using). Works like a charm and with MOG or Spotify you get 320kbps or any of your music output in higher quality. I have not done strict A/B comparisons but I use it right now for the majority of my listening. Almost makes me think a computer based setup is unnecessary and a lot more work

Joe, I checked Wyred 4 Sound website for the modified Sonos. It looks like they send you a new Sonos ZP-90 (or whatever Sonos calls it these days, Connect: something) with their modifications? Or do you send them your unit and they modify it? For the price, I hope the former.

I agree, as I am trying different players to work on the Mac with or around iTunes, I find it frustrating. Last night I was trying A/B with an unmodded Sonos and yes, the computer with Fidelia sounded better, with both going into my BDA-1. Something with
the simplicity of the Sonos - with higher quality - would be a winner.

Would the modded Sonos be compatible with the Halide Bridge?

Hi John,

You can do either, buy a modded unit or send yours in to be modded. I bought a fully modded new unit through Ivan and could not be happier. I am not sure about the halide bridge, isn't that the interface from your computer? The modded sonos plugs directly into your dac and outputs 24/96. They offer other higher rez outputs but state the 24/96 version sounds best.

I think It's $850 vs $550, not cheap but worth it IMO. Plus it is totally silent and I control the music with my smartphone. Awesome!

Duh. Of course the bridge won't work, it's USB to S/PDIF. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth.

Now if only Sonos would stream higher resolution...

No worries. If it wasn't for Wyred 4 Sound to up the quality on the Sonos, I may not have considered it. I guess the next step up would be a music server but the modded Sonos satisfies on so many levels I can overlook any shortcomings, however few.

My W4S Sonos was delivered yesterday. So easy to install and it's basically plug and play. So far so good, but I'm sure break-in process is needed...

Any good station? I signed up for Spotify but it's prompting me that you have to get the Premium ($9.99) to be able to use it on Sonos?
