The tumor turned out to be much larger than was first thought, and so the surgery turned into a very complicated procedure.

About a day after the surgery, Dan then experienced a second, massive heart attack. He did survive this, and three stents were installed during an emergency procedure. His heart was placed on an impella device, to assist it while, hopefully, it could recover some strength. After nearly a week on artificial life support and a nearly insurmountable road ahead of him, Dan ordered that all life support and treatments be discontinued. It was absolutely heartbreaking.

Really sad! Does Dan have any children? I know his wife died suddenly last year

Dan had no children, his only living next of kin is his nephew.

Pete, I commented earlier on Dan’s passing, and just came back and read this, his decision to terminate his life shows he went out with his boots on.

I’m not sure where his nephew is and hoping he is somewhat close where he can let Dans tubes still
play keeping him alive in Audio spirit.

Dan was definitely very courageous in his last days and hours; and steadfast in his faith. He told me more than once in his final days that his life was in the hands of the good lord.

Dan had told me in the past that he did not consider himself a particularly religious man, but he did believe in God, and in the afterlife. Each time I sat down to dinner with Dan and Marlene, a simple grace would be said.

Dan's nephew lives in the Port St. Lucie (South Florida) area, but also has property about 30 minutes from Dan's house. I'm not sure what he plans to do exactly as to how he will divide his time. I'm not sure that he is either, at this point.

Default Obituary for Dan

I wasn't sure that an obituary for Dan would appear, since Dan wanted no services of any kind.

However, this obituary can now be viewed:

Thank you very much for sharing that, Pete. Very simple and nicely worded.

I am only seeing this thread now and am deeply saddened by Dan's passing and the amount of suffering he had to endure these last few years. I had no idea. I respect and applaud his decision to not prolong this suffering, which would have only benefited the doctor's pockets. I always enjoyed his posts and almost bought a pair of speakers from him a few years ago. I am sorry I never got to meet him in person. He not only will be missed in these pages, he will also be irreplaceable.

With everything that has been happening in the world these last few days, I have been submerged in a depression, and have not felt like listening to music in quite a while. But today I will fire up the system in your honor, Dan.

Before that, I knew Dan had lost some weight (not surprising, given what had been through in the last year, with Marlene's passing) but I thought he was doing pretty good. I had just visited him a couple of days after Christmas, and we had the usual great time listening to music, chatting about all sorts of things-our crazy youth, laughing and enjoying ourselves. I spent the night in his studio as usual.

In less than three weeks, we went from what we thought was just a scare but we were confident he was in good hands and it would all end well. But in the days that followed, and complication piled upon complication, I began feeling a sense of dread that I've felt in the past when I was about to lose a loved one. I hoped and prayed in would turn around. Before I knew it, the worst possible outcome was upon us.

Since that time (now four days right about at this hour when I was notified), I've been consumed with grief. It comes comes and goes, in waves. It helps somewhat when I'm keeping myself busy, such as at work. Of course, I'm keeping in inside during those hours. But when I leave, driving home my eyes will be filling up with tears again, as they are now.

Dan was always there. For over a decade, I would call Dan at any time, day or night, just to chat for no particular reason. The calls would average about an hour, seldom less than half an hour. I would drive up there, he would drive down here.

Now, he and Marlene are both gone. I still can't believe it.

Dan was a huge voice on this forum, a kind person who helped many. The loss to the forum is difficult to weigh. The personal grief and sense of loss I'm feeling now is impossible to weigh.

I just don't know how long it will take for this sadness to subside.

Pete.....
I knew you were very close to him. I am so sorry for you. I can imagine your pain.
Time will heal.

I learnt this terrible news a few days ago. I am, like many, deeply saddened.
Yesterday, a friend gave me more details about what happened. My heart is crying and devastated.
I knew Dan since 2005 or 2006. We met on AK.
One or two years before the birth of AA. He was the one who invited me to AA.
We have had a huge writing relation over the years. Not only about our hobby. When my father died in 2009, he offered me tons of compassion and support. And in many occasions of my life. We also talked over the phone a few times.
I got the chance to meet him in his beautiful home and I spent one day with him.
Dan was one of the best man I ever met. He was all about attention to others and he personified Friendship and Kindness to me.
He was also a very brave and courageous man who faced worst life situations with Dignity and Philosophy.
From what I learnt yesterday, it is no surprise to me that Dan kept this brave attitude until his last breath.
I will never ever forget him. Like all the people who were blessed to meet him.
RIP my Dear Friend. Reunited with Marlene, the love of your life.

Pete.....
Be brave. Dan left as he lived. With Dignity and Courage. He gave us during all the years we had the chance to know him, the best example of what a “Mensch” is.
Time will heal my friend. Time will heal.
We both know that our friend is in a “better” place now. Right to the Lord. Amen.

Through Dan's presence we all became more acute audiophiles and more importantly better people.

We are very fortunate to have known him and to now know he joins Marlene.

God Bless.
