Layla Remasters
Not sure why, but last night I decided I would listen to Layla and other Assorted Love Songs this morning. My source was the ripped version of the CD that came with a 3CD 20th anniversary set issued in 1990.
First song and it sounded like crap to me. I chalked it up to not letting the MC2301s warm up. Got another cup of coffee (cawfee to you New Yorkers) and after 20 minutes started it again. Better but still not good. Clearly very compressed and verified by ROON as it showed a DR of +4. So I fired up the Tidal version, 40th Anniversary set which was remastered and issued in 2011. First song was disorienting as it had so much more staging. Wide and very open. Went on to listen to this entire version and enjoyed every minute. While listening, I found a few threads on another forum which discussed the various versions out there. I had no clue so many issues of this album existed. The most interesting thread was actually a blind test poll of downloaded samples from 6 different issues. About 70% of those voting chose sample D which was an SHM-CD issued from a 2013 remastering. My version was voted the worst sounding! So while I work to buy the SHM-CD version, I also read there is a new SACD issued in late 2016. Has anyone here listened to that? Thoughts?

Got it on order - had read years ago that the masters probably weren't the most high-fidelity recording, based on one of the re-issues. Absolutely one of the top Rock albums of all time.
