It is much darker (reddish) color than the natural shine of 'regular' maple wood; say like maple wood from Canada for example.

* It looks real nice in your room's decor, and with your gear.

Now, let me go further:

I'm a sucker for the natural beauty of all woods. ...And they all have their own characteristics and color accentuation.

Maple, I love. Mahogany, I love. Rosewood, I love. Oak, I love. ...And all the other woods, but always in their natural color.

Nelson, your maple shelves, what was their original color (natural state) before you use the polyurethane?
...Maple from the Dominican Republic, with a darker (red) tone?

-- Alright Nelson; now I got you 100% all the way.

Red looks good with black; McIntosh audio gear for example.

Light color wood, like maple, looks great with silver components, like Esoteric audio gear for example.

* And you just showed us two perfect examples.
