b) the Max Voltage Output of the preamp must be higher than the Sensitivity Input value of the power amplifier.

The values involved are listed below:

Nagra PL-L
Max Voltage Output: 1.0V Unbalanced/Balanced
Impedence Output: 60Ohms

Burmester 911 MK3
Sensitivity Input: 770mV Unbalanced/Balanced
Impedance Input: 22.9kOhms Unbalanced, 1.8kOhms Balanced

So they seem compatible!
It always wonders me why the unbalanced input impedance is so much higher than the balanced on the 911. It seems like if you are trying to match up a preamp that is borderline to the 1:10 rule balanced it might make more sense to go unbalanced so that the pre is more in the comfort zone.

FWIW I run a Weiss Medea (0.2 Ohms!) balanced and a Wavelength Cosecant (~500 Ohms) unbalanced direct to a 911mk3 and these both work great.

I'm pretty sure any preamp on the market will be able to drive the input stage of a 911, it's more a matter of how the pre affects the tonality. I think the 911 is basically an amp that "does everything right" and will be able to make the most out of any source and front end components.

I read in the review of the Burmester 911 MK3 on TONEAudio that they used Nagra PL-L as a preamplifier.

Correct. A friend of mine just ordered the 911 in factory mono trim with 077 pre (with the external PSU) to drive his Focal Grand Utopia EM

Very good choice.

Years ago in New York (Sound By Singer) I experience the said combination (the preamp was the 011) and was great.

Since I started this thread, I figure I might as well put closure to it. I'm sad to say I sold my last piece of my Burmester gear (911Mk3). It's a sad day for sure but I'm not looking back. Now starts the finalization of my next new journey (tubes or bust). I do like the sound of a 300B but just need a little more juice for those Tannoy's on head banger nights. I've come to realize why they call these low power amps flea amps. There's a million of them and there everywhere. So right now I'm reading about a company called Audion. They have this amp called the The Golden Dream 300b mono amps. A PSET,that looks promising but I'm not sure. Has anyone opinions on the company as far as built quality, customer service and of course sound? If I was smart, I would keep my little $3500 300b integrated and not touch my audio war chest fund.

Hi John,

It's exciting to see you follow a different path and I (we) hope to enjoy the journey with you. As much as I LOVE my Burmester, I still crave tubes and don't ever see myself getting rid of those little bottles of glowing magic. There is just something so satisfying about what tubes do to music playback.

I have heard of Audion but not heard them. Time to do more research. You should start a new thread in the tubes and valves forum and so we can teach the other guys a thing or two.

Joe
