It's that time again!!

I have some disheartening news…..last evening I have discovered that my Florida room’s JBL 4313B woofers
are in need of new foam surrounds (actually only the left one, but we always do both). I’m not really surprised, they are
definitely a vintage model and I’m surprised I’ve gotten by this long. It’s always a bummer….I will have to decide whether to
re-foam them myself or have a professional do it. A refoam kit for the LE10H woofers used in the 4313B runs about $30.
I purchased these speakers on eBay in 2003, and I thought at the time that surrounds could be original. So, add another
8 years that I’ve owned them…..

If that isn’t bad enough, I see that my L220’s 15” passive radiators (main system) are also suspect. There are suspicious
areas on both of these surrounds as well. Once again, I’m not really surprised, I last had these reconed in 1997, so it’s been
14 years. A recone kit for the PR15C passive radiator runs about $35. The active drivers in my L220A’s (LE14H woofers)
were reconed in 2002 so they are good for quite a while yet. Fortunately, the PR15’s are passive drivers, and the
system has a 63hz crossover point below which the lows are handed off to my 18” sub.

Similarly, the Florida Room system with the 4313B’s has an 18” sub with crossover, so the drivers in question
for both systems do not carry a very demanding load.

It’s not urgent in either case, but it’s still a bummer!!!



My left 4313B...ibvious deterioration. There were no symptoms, I discovered this during a "routine examination".




The right L220 radiator...not obvious in the photo, but at approximately the 4 O'clock position, some of the foam has actually flaked off.

David...no can do. And even if I could, the speakers I'd like to see in my Living room run about $45K.

Pete.......You have one of the best JBL speaker repair shops in the country right there, The Speaker Exchange on Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa. Let them do the JBL woofers and passive radiators. They will be perfect, and you won't have to mess with them for another 20 years.

Dan...yes, I have done business with The Speaker Exchange and they do come highly recommended. That's who reconed my L220A's LE14H woofers in 2002. The was some coil rubbing in one and they reconed it again, no questions asked. They also reconed the LE5-9 midranges in my 4313B's and did a perfect job.

In 2007, The Speaker Exchange reconed the 2245H 18" driver in my JBL B460 sub and did a perfect job.

The L220 radiators were reconed in 1997 by another local speaker repair shop. That job was fine, but I stopped doing business with them years later for other reasons.

I too would recommend The speaker Exchange in Tampa without reservation.

+1 They did my L300's years ago, a perfect job of course.
