Default What should I do with my DVDs after I ripped them?

I've ripped almost all my DVDs to hard drives. I no long spin the disc when I watch a movie so the DVDs are just taking up space. I kinda want to keep them around just in case I need to rip them again, but I have backups of the rips. My girlfriend tells me I should donate or sell them. There worth next to nothing so a part of me don't want to let go because I like having the originals, just in case. What should I do?

Mike -- Send them to me -- I have zero, nadda, zip-o DVD's -- it would be a cheap way for me to start a library. Let me know when they are in the mail so I'll be on the look out -- maybe I'll have a player by the time they arrive.

Dj...What did you rip them to. I have all my DVD's on a home made
Window's based movie server. I keep mine close. you never know!!. Plus it make me feel more legitimate having the real McCoy. My CD's I keep in a
box in a closet.

Good point about being legit. I don't want the FBI to come to my house.

XXX? There on a special private server.

DJ.......First things first, your DVD's aren't any of the girlfriend's business. Tell her to donate or sell her own stuff. She's probably got a closet full of shoes and clothes she no longer wears. Try getting her to part with any of that stuff.

Keep the DVD's as permanent backups. Hard drives fail, software develops glitches, a virus could play havoc with your hard drive music and video library, not to mention the resolution of actual DVD's is superior to hard drive playback. Keep the DVD's.

This one confuses me, but that is pretty easy. I wouldn't be without a server for my CD's since I skip over songs I don't like and make playlists, etc. Why do you need a server for something that you only switch once every 2 hours or at most twice in an evening. Compressing DVD's is going to have some impact on video quality and if you don't you compress the files you are eating up about 6GB per disc. A TB goes pretty quick.

That said, I go to the movies when I want to see a film, maybe thats why I am confused.

Im sure you have your favorite movies that you watch more than once, some even 5 or more times. I would keep my favorites and sell the rest. Especially the ones you only watch once. If you havn't watched it in over a year, sell it. It's just collecting dust and if your hard drive fails its not like your missing it anyway.

My girlfriend doesn't have that much stuff, that's the problem. She does a clean house at least twice a year.

I ripped the DVDs to uncompressed format and yes it takes up gigs of HD space but I have a Drobo. I am leaning towards selling them off becasue I haven't spun them in at least a year and I have Netflix so I do have access to all the DVDs I need. The Down side is if something happens to the Drobo and my backup drives I'm screwed and I'll have to get the DVDs from Netflix and start all over.

I do alot of streaming netflix. video quality isnt that great but when nothing is on at least there is something I can find for background movie and sometime I find a good one. Im sure you wouldnt go back and re purchase the dvd. you would buy Blu Ray or start Ripping them to your HD. Options....
