For two weeks, I owned the Focal Sopra 2. The focals were not a good match with my krell amp. Before the Focals, I had the Cremona M. |

Mark, don't panic.
On all the occasions I heard SF Amati Futuras, they sounded great to excellent. You will find out how to make these beauties sing!

Try the masters setup ASAP. It aims to move the speakers into the position where they interface with the room modes to produce the smoothest and deepest bass response. The master setup then works to optimize the midrange/bass balance, then the treble balance, and finally the sound staging.
I've had my Futura's in two different rooms and they are better sounding now than ever before. Some of it is the room, a lot is just taking the time to get them dialed in. Good luck! In this case patience and detail orientation pay off in spades. Tom

Ok...... The Cremona M's are great speakers but I still prefer the Futuras however I am biased. The speaker setup process is tedious but get a REL to fill in the bottom end as you were likely would end up in that direction anyway. (Ivan could also help on a JL option!) [emoji1]

Dan, I have a question about "Dead zone" to avoid.
"6 - Avoid the Dead Zone. This area starts 6-12 inches from the back wall and extends into the room anywhere between 12-24 inches typically. It is dependent on room geometry, furnishings and speaker. Bass will become one note with no power/extension." Is this the distance from the back wall to the front or the back of speaker? Eryk |

Eryk,
I am pretty sure it is to the back of the speaker. With your speakers, you couldn't get the front 6" from the back wall. I interpreted that to mean make sure you move your speakers more than that distance from the rear wall. But start with them both on the rear wall of you can. Don't use a tape measure in this process. If you can't move your speakers more than 24" into your room, just accept that limitation and optimize within your boundaries.

Eryk.......I did not have a hand in developing the Master Speaker Placement Guide so I can only assume the distance stated would be from the the rear of the speakers, this because 6-12 inches from the back wall would not apply to the front of most speakers due to their physical depth. Hopefully someone more familiar with the process will correct me if I am wrong about this. My Amati Anniversario speakers ended up at 30 inches from the back of the speaker to the wall behind them.
I see you have been a member of AA since December 2014 and this is your first post. Good to see you come out of the shadows. Welcome.

For sure use the masters setup process, it was designed for SF speakers and will bring the best out in them. Get a friend to help and set aside a good two hours alcohol-free . When I bought my Futuras my dealer came to install them. Two of them, both quite experienced, spent the better part of two hours tweaking and adjusting, in quite small increments. The speakers sounded good at the outset, but by the time they were finished they were giving me goosebumps. So don't despair, get a buddy to help, and take your time. And start without a sub to get them properly dialed in - while a sub may be right for you in the end, make sure the Futuras are fully optimized before trying to add a sub.

So just to update, the dealer has an employee who went through the training....albeit years ago, he says.
He's coming over this evening to help position my speakers. I'm kinda optimistic. I say kinda because he said position shouldn't take long at all which is a bit at odds with some of the posts. Either way, it should be a great place to start. I'll post my findings asap. Fingers are crossed. |

It seems like moving the speakers in a 2D area of intrusion would be extremely time-consuming. If your speakers are large, moving them both inward and then forward and backward and listening at each step would be tough (at least for me). Is this what everyone is doing or are you picking a fixed forward position and moving the speaker into the room until the sweet spot is found? |
