One or two?

Okay folks... thinking about either one REL S3 or two of the older REL T9 models to complement my Wilson Duette IIs. Amps are conrad-johnson tube mono blocks at 160wpc and the room is 30x20x12. And, yes I know, two S5s or G1s would be better but I'm retired now.

Opinions please... Thanks in advance.

Bob... I always use, and recommend two subs. They will presurize the room far better, and equally.

Well, I'm a little late to the party, but on the chance you haven't thrown the switch yet. I have had better luck with two subs than one. Even in my relatively small basement room (13 x 20 x 7ft), I am able to get far smoother bass with two F112 than with one.

P.S. Your room dimensions are enviable!

Hey Mike,

I ended up with one JL Audio f113 sub. Actually didn't have room for two. It's a powerful, sizable and heavy sub with a built in digital room adjustment program. Excellent product... and at the right price. It was a very lightly used demo unit from a high volume Wilson dealer who didn't sell many to go with the big Wilson speakers. It has really enhanced the overall sound of my system in this large room and has disappeared in the process. After studying all the set up papers on the JLA help site I made the non intuitive decision to move the sub away from the main speakers to a point one third of the way down the righthand wall toward the listening position. it is now about seven feet closer to my listening chair than the mains. After the move the sub's output now integrates perfectly with the mains. The low end sounds like it's coming from the speaker end of the room and in perfect sync. Truly amazing. Thanks for the details. Interestingly enough, I also have moved the subs about 1/3 of the way along the side walls and wound up with smoother bass response. I tried four or five positions, and that was the best I could find. (I use an OmniMic2 to measure response at the listening seat.)

I agree that the JL subs integrate exceptionally well. Crossing over at 80 Hz from a pair of Janszen zA2.1 mains, there is no sensation whatsoever of separate drivers or separate locations in the bass. These are great subs -- and when one developed minor problems, I got superb service from JL as well.

With subwoofers ya get a lot of room nodes and I kind of do the same thing also using an Omnimic 2. I take average readings from three different listening positions but take two readings at my primary listing seat and average them all with the omnimic software. Kind of compromise a little bit for when I have others over besides myself.

I put four very large bass traps in my room which did help a little bit with the standing nodes.

Incidently I also use JL Audio subs but built mine myself. They came out pretty darn nice. Very very powerful bass response when called for.
