It has been a number of years since I have visited Cuba but my understanding is that you should buy them from the government shops and keep the receipt. If you do not have the receipt the cigars can be confiscated at the airport on the way out. This was done to cut down on black market activity.

I stand corrected if this in no longer the case but you should research the rules before buying.

Interesting. I was only thinking about getting them into the US and never thought about Cuban issues. Silly me, it is still a communist country... thanks!!!

I agree with Alki. In Cuba, the only way to be sure that you are buying the real thing is if you buy from the government owned stores. Plenty of fake cigars going around. And by the way, you are now allowed to bring Cuban cigars into the country without a limit as long as they are for personal consumption.

Thank you. Since we are getting there via a cruise liner (bringing our hotel with us!), we have excursions planned to visit a famous plantation / rolling factory and a large store in town.

Now I am wondering if the 100 stick limit is per person or per family? E.g. Can my wife and I each bring back 100?

I will dig into that. The Cigar Aficionado link doesn't mention that.

Yes, each of you can bring 100 cigars tax free. From the article:
"According to OFAC's website: "A traveler may include up to 100 cigars and 200 cigarettes in the $800 exemption from duty... Additional cigars and cigarettes may be brought into the country, but they will be subject to duty and Federal excise taxes. Excess amounts are subject to a 4 percent flat rate of duty."

That is the limit for ONE traveler (you). Your wife is another traveler. She is allowed the same amount.

The only Cuban cigars I have had were Romeo and Juliets. Nothing compared to these! But I enjoyed them during my only trip to Italy, and they were delightful:-)
