Default Very Delicious Sound: The Ortorfon SPU

Seeing that I was going old school on my new AVID Diva II SP with a rebuilt/restored SME 3009, what better cartridge than a classic Ortofon SPU MC?

Products - Cartridges - Classic GM E MkII

The cartridge is described as having a "lot of body."

And this is true, but it does resolve a fair amount of detail as well. Plugs right into the SME arm and requires a heavier counterweight, but worth the effort.

Full review to follow....

SPU can be most adicting....somewhat makes you forget about chasing the perfection and scrutinizing our hi dollar MC carts.....I really like the drive SPU's bring to the table and they seem to have a bit of the old school sound but with out sounding flat.....Enjoy!

Jeff Good to see you enjoying the "SPU sound"

I have owned your classic GM E mk2 and Royal GM for few years now and they are delicious

Are the high tracking forces of these SPUs anything to worry about in terms of groove wear?

Yea Setge, they are a bit like nails. You need to replace your lp every 3 or 4 plays.

Seriously, no issues whatsoever. SPU's have been around for over 50 years.

With your Shindo gear, the classic GM E would superb. Its nice and direct and a good buddy to the denon 103

Only if you don't set them up correct like any other cartridge.....The 3-5 grams of tracking weight is fine....consider it deep cleaning

I love SPUs. They just play music IMO. My latest is a 90th Anniversary version which has more detail and more dynamic than SPU synergy.
