Funny, how preamps sound different. When I dropped a 520 in my Dart system it didn't sound good at all. It was very bright. Just for grins I dropped my 720 into my Dart system and it sounded great. Not as good as the 720/710 combo but really good.

The 5 series came out first with the new power supplies, now with the 7 series also having the new power supply the ranking is restored.

That was touched on in the review of the latest 7 Series (701-711-725) products in the January issue of Absolute Sound. The newer products are back on top.

Hi Jim,

I'll give a full report on the 520/501 combo once I install the 520 and its had the chance to break in. I auditioned the 540/520/501 combo at a dealer and we experimented by adding and subtracting the 520. I felt the sound with the 520 was smoother, more textured, had greater density and conveyed more nuance that without the 520. We'll see what results my system yields.

Most of the comments read here and elsewhere prefer a preamp in the system. My experience as well. It would be fun to to test a 540 against the K-01.

Hi Jim,

Yes, I would like to do a direct comparison of the K-01 and 540 in my listening room. I had a lengthy listening session at the dealer with the 540 and 501, followed by one at home with the K-01 and 501, and it's my feeling that the K-01 hangs right there with the 540. I think I would only trade the K-01 for a K-01X.
