Default Cary slp98p rehash

Hey all.

I wanted to get back to you on my 98. After the repair problem and resolution/ upgrade to direct coupled w hexfreds plus Mundorf output cap upgrade - I ended up rolling in new 6sn7s. Ended up getting 60s rca 6sn7s. The whole unit sounds very dimensional / very quiet / has more mid warmth / better bass. I absolutely love it. You never know when you have noise till you don’t have noise. That has been my experience at least.

I am sure there may be better tubes but right now I’m really digging these rca 6sn7s. They just kind of took the unit over the top for me.

Hey Tim,
thanks for looping back and posting your update. As a another SLP98 owner with upgrades, I was closely monitoring your situation and hoping for the best outcome. Glad they found the part issue. Something similar happened to me before summer on my amp. Occurred after local (experienced) mastertech level upgrades to my amp. Similar round and round chase to your situation, it turned out to be a failed part, bad hexfreds (not the tech's fault) that showed up only after 6-8 hours of use, after the initial two day burn in.

I spoke to an industry colleague who knows CAD designs extremely well and he explained the whole direct coupled upgrade, what gets removed, and how it opens up the soundstage and detail a bit more on the 98. Now that you've had it running for a while, is that what you experienced before & after?

Hey decooney.

Yes that is a good explanation. I’d say it seems to play bigger after the upgrade. Spacious , open, better bass. It keeps it’s basic sonic signature - so there is no doubt it’s still your 98. Just a mo better 98 - I think that is how someone described it perfectly to me.
