I used to live in Michigan and back in 2008 I got my highly modified Acura NSX up to 160 on I-96. There was next to no traffic and it was thrilling, but I wouldn’t ever try something like that today. Crazy thing was I was only in 5th gear - still had a gear left and who knows what I could have done. Glad no MSP was there.

I have to say that my lowly 2016 BMW 340ix is a joy to drive on these empty roads. It’s just nice to have some room to stretch out (not 110 mph over stretched out, but stretched out a little). Been so cooped up - feels good to get the RPMs up.

Around these parts that's a minimum 30 day sentence. In my view 6 months would be more appropriate.

I highly recommend anyone who has a need for speed to join a car club and attend one of their driving events. If possible, start with an autocross. This won’t be very high speed but will teach you the proper lines to take when navigating through a sea of orange cones typically within a large parking lot. Many of these groups will offer you an experienced instructor to ride along with you in your car. I very recently joined this board but my other hobby is driving on the local road courses in California. I learned the most by having instructors and later cup racers drive my car while I sat in the passenger seat amazed. It was a very humbling experience for me when I started 20 years ago but eventually became an instructor with the Porsche Owners Club.

Couldn’t agree more except I would not discount going to a HPDE track day from the get-go. You will have an instructor who wants you to learn and have fun as well as get themselves and your car back in one piece.

Its exhilarating for first timers who have always dreamed of driving a road course and seeing what they and their cars are capable of.

This opinion is colored by AutoX days where I never got the same satisfaction as I do on a track.

My son and I both drove a Ferrari on a Race Track in Las Vegas a few years ago. Many hours of class, and prep prior to getting behind the wheel, along with a expert instructor.

We went with the same Ferrari I own, a 458 Italia. BTW, there are no speed limits on the track. We had a spectacular day, and all the track time was recorded for us on a USB stick.

Yes, I’d rather attend a HPDE or better yet a time trial event which allows the use of transponders so you can get your lap times and see others too over an autocross. These events also offer a lot more seat time but are typically at a lot higher speed and also involve passing usually within limits and rules so this might be imitating and distracting for a newbie.
