Mine look similar to your last photo. Not a pan head, but they look nice with the finishing washers. Certainly like they were made for each other. I will send photos soon. It's probably overkill, but we went with 20 per speaker, which is 1 more per side. On the Valencia's, the inside wood trim (where the screws attach) were not flush in the corners, so that was the weakest place. For that reason, we chose to forego using the corners. Maybe different on the Flamenco's. I left only 4 screws in for now, simply because I have to go back and foam the backs. Early (well- late 2am) impressions are positive. No glitches what so ever. Funny, my friend said the backs would look nice stained natural to their own color. I have to agree, it's a viable option. I am dead center (#6 of 11)on the crossover point strip. Dial I was playing with, but I believe it will have to be at least 12 O'clock, or halfway open. Thanks!!!

No question, with the washers, bass is very tight and articulate. Then if you loosen them a 1/2 turn, it gets loose and wooly. I find 1/4 turn to be the sweet spot, unless of course, you're listening off axis. (-: Photos coming
soon.

Hi! New guy here.

I just wanted to participate in this thread as a former Altec owner: I happily enjoyed a pair of Model 19's for several years until I was forced to let them go due to downsizing/relocation... That was about 8 years ago and to this day I still miss the behemoths!

Despite their faults, the Altecs brought music to life in a way that I haven't been able to experience with other speakers.

I don't have the room for big high efficiency speakers right now, but that is something I would definitely like to revisit in the future!

Nice! Yeah that's the good thing about efficient speakers is it seems like you need less gear in general - like a small integrated, or low-watt tube amp and you are good to go. Vince - I don't know his handle on here - has a pair of Flamencos and when he was by helping my neighbor make his backs brought by a Craigslist find... some mini Valencias that looked like they were left in the dryer too long haha. but still cool for a smaller place. Or maybe some killer pure 1-way paper cone drivers like Fostex or PHY with next to nothing for a crossover except maybe a cap to reduce LF excursion. It would image like crazy, be easy to place, and not drive your neighbors crazy with Model 19 bass haha. You could make a lot of fun out of this! =)

I'm ready to try some cap rolling in my Valencia 16 Ohm Jagusch crossover. The HF cap is a 4MF Sprague and I am not sure the value of the LF cap. My meter is not working. The cap in question is on the left rear of the crossover board. Has anyone measured the value of these?

Which one would you start with first? The HF section?

Regards, Idler

Most likely the HF cap is in the signal path and the LF cap is parallel to the signal path. So, you probably wouldn't gain much with the LF cap. Many incredible Altec crossovers use motor turned oil caps such as what you have. Shindo did. Werner did. It's always interesting to explore but it's very likely what you have is very nice already. If anything it may be better to leave good enough alone, and consider trying a bypass cap on the Sprague... Perhaps the Duelund CAST Silver 0.01uF or the Vishay MKP1837. You can read more about these here:

Humble Homemade Hifi - Cap Test

And IMO before I'd do any of that I'd make sure you have the HF level (taps) and the impedance (crossover value) set where you are most happy.

I suspect you are right on regarding the bypass cap. Thanks.
