Default IEC input on my Mc462 just failed 😞

Soooooo bummed ..

I was moving some cables around getting ready for a new component to arrive soon and I heard a snap or almost loud click sound from the back of the MC462 when I went to pull the power cable ... I went to put the cable back in snug and the whole IEC was loose and appears to have fallen into the chassis of the amp!

So mad as this thing is barely a month old. Now I have to lug it to a repair center and during COVID that’s gonna be an adventure.

Has anyone dealt with this type of repair before? Seems pretty straight forward.

Does McIntosh have you find someone to fix it or do they have their own people? I’m in the SF Bay Area and know of a great place but he’s not part of their authorized network.

Are you within return/exchange policy of wherever you bought it from?

Sorry to hear this...

If it is going to be repaired under warranty, it needs to be an Authorized Service Center.

Have any pictures? Out of curiosity I went back and looked and all the amps and some integrated and preamps to see which used the same as the 462.

I see the 901 has a similar, but with screws. Some of the older amps and smaller amps use one that looks snapped in instead of flush like the 462, probably less likely to fail.

Ok, so I took it apart and it's a piece of cake to fix, I just need the part (gonna call McIntosh and get it tomorrow)... In a nutshell, the IEC input is a stupidly cheap, hard plastic piece not fit to be on a $20 hot water kettle, much less a $9000 amp... the quality of the plastic is the worse I've seen in a long time .. the actual pins are also very small and hardy held the power cable on, which is why it had so much play... unacceptable.

I'm half tempted to take it to the local amp guy I know and have him do an after market higher quality one... sad to think they might be cost cutting? I can't imagine this piece lasting a "lifetime" ..

Wow, this is a major bummer. It should just take the shop and hour or so to fix. But, they probably have to order the part from McIntosh.

Here's the link at McIntosh Labs to check on a local authorized repair center near you: https://www.mcintoshlabs.com/support/servicenetwork

How could that part be on back order at Mcintosh? It seems that if it were, production would be stopped on all their products. I would have my dealer order the part from Mcintosh as they would have some pull in getting one right away and then I would just install it.

I hope you can get it fixed soon.

Sorry to hear that happened! It’s also disappointing to hear the IEC is so inadequate. Especially when most owners use aftermarket cords that are like ship tow lines!

Good luck with what sounds like an easy fix.
