Default Why Pikes Peak Is The Most Dangerous Race Track In America

I never thought the race was that dangerous and so insane to drive on. Clearly the drivers on this race are warriors but I can imagine doing the race being a once in a lifetime experience

Actually, I think Loudon is the most dangerous track to race on, at least with respect to motorcycle roadracing.

Thanks for posting - really interesting video. I’ve driven the Pikes Peak road many times and it is spectacular. I can’t imagine doing it at speed.

Not to take away from a very cool video but Pikes Peak is not a racetrack...there is a Pikes Peak International Raceway (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pike...tional_Raceway) a 1 mile oval racetrack, and then there is the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pike...nal_Hill_Climb ) an annual 12.46 mile race utilizing Pikes Peak Highway, a public road (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pikes_Peak_Highway)

If we open up the “most dangerous” category to include temporary public roads closed for race use, there are much more dangerous races...these are professional racers in professional closed circuit races on public access roads (ignoring spectator deaths and amateurs/non-sanctioned racing or club events)

PPIHC: 7 deaths
LeMans: 24
Dakar Rally: 30
Isle of Man TT: 151 deaths (motorcycle)

If we’re going to look at closed access/dedicated racetracks
Daytona: 27
Monza: 43
Spa: 48
Indianapolis: 57
Nurburgring: 68*

*although Nurburgring is open to daily public use, you do need to buy a ticket to enter, so essentially its a closed track.

But my vote for the “most dangerous racetrack in the world” goes to the Baja 1000, where professional racers go all out on public roads without the roads being closed and WITH the public driving on the same roads! Dedicated trophy trucks, rally cars, motorcycles, dune buggies, atv’s and family station wagons all racing at the same time, combined with spectators building “obstacles” on the course which may include boulders, pits, diverted rivers and barbed wire, often just to create entertainment for them, plus the threat of violence and occasional long distance sniper shooting at the racers from hilltops, combined with the natural and ever changing rugged desert terrain with temps reaching below freezing at night, no safety or corner workers, thick fog like dust from the kicked up clay, and you have the most dangerous race in the world. There is an average of 3 competitor deaths per year (x52 years = ~156 deaths). “It’s like being in a 24-hour plane crash” -Parnelli Jones
