Default Restoring wooden wine boxes

I've recently been buying some really interesting wooden wine boxes/crates from the local superstore. After going over them and often rebuilding somewhat, they really look GREAT and can be used for storage or as decor. Anyone have comments or ideas? I hope to have some photos of these gems soon if there's interest.

I gave a few to my kids from my wine celler and they keep video games etc in them.

Next is RioJa. I'm cutting the bottom panels square and reattaching with wood glue. Also (not visible) above is one of the ring-nails partially removed to measure diameter, since I may use tiny brass flat head screws to hold this baby together, in addition to glue.

In the upstairs office is Dedicado. This box is of plywood construction and has a VERY nice dadoed cover with thumb-ring. CAT-5 cables are stored in this box. Excellent!! and should last a lifetime.

That's it for now.. and FYI, I love woodworking.

Yeah we have a few here but most are for decor above the cellar or kitchen area.

They tend to get emptied rather quickly...

I found a dynamite box in the crawl space of my house in South Dakota. Its in a mining town, so finding a box marked "high explosives" is not too uncommon but still a bit jarring!

From amplifier servicing, to fireworks, and now back to wine boxes. The latest addition to the collection is another Flichman box, Tupungato!! You can probably see the boxes stacked right next to the Sound System Engineering book by Don Davis, and the Hewlett Packard instrument catalogs.

Excellent.. with a sliding cover and fine plywood construction.

Back to the El Coto de Rioja. This box is almost complete, as it only needs a cover.

Wine box on top of a stack of McIntosh cartons. That box on the floor to the left contains a MC 2505 amplifier!!

Some details.. in the following pics you can see a few of the 16 brass screws that hold the bottom on. Those bottom panels were removed, cut square and refitted. Notice where the recessed screw heads are filled, as are the original staple holes.

Upper box nails replaced with screws. Bottom panels refitted and attached with a total of 16 screws 1" long. All voids filled.

The sides were held on by 1-1/4" serrated box nails. The top nails were replaced by 1" brass screws which probably will NOT be filled with putty. Here is a close-up of the top-edge screws.

Upper nails on each panel (four total) were replaced with #4 x 1" brass wood screws (and glue.)

An exact #4 woodscrew countersink bit was used to drill the pilot holes.. which BTW was where the nails were previously. Not sure about you, but I just love puttsing around with wood projects.

Could have been a mind blowing experience.
