Terry, it isn't great cinema, but it sure is fun.

If you add up the casualties of all the Earthly cities the aliens demolished, Independence Day has the most implied human deaths of any movie ever produced.

I didn't count them, but "Sudden Impact" must have had quite a lot of casualties too...

I watched Independence Day twice in the cinemas. I was in Los Angeles on the day of its premier, so I watched it in an IMAX theatre. I have never seen anything so big, the screen was massive compared to what I was used to in Australia. What was even funnier was the occasional American yelling "GO USA!" and "YEAH KICK SOME ALIEN BUTT!!!" during the movie.

One week later I was back in Australia and had to take my little cousins to watch it ... again! The audience was totally different. As we shuffled out after the movie, one woman said ... "I wanted to take out my little American flag and wave the damned thing ... that movie was excruciating!"
