Ivan.......I still make the occasional mixed music tape on one of my two reel to reel machines but not nearly as into it as I used to be. If I would set up one of my tape machines in either the living room or studio two channel systems I would record mixed music tapes from vinyl. That's what I enjoyed the most in the past.

I haven't recorded in years...I've been meaning to do some work on my Crown Reel to Reel (needs a pinch roller for openers) but I never seem to get around to it. It's a great sounding machine but it loses speed as the take up reel fills up.
My Nakamichi Dragon doesn't work at all...I bought a refurb kit for it but haven't had the time to do the work. In addition, I know there is other work that needs to be done internally and it's not an easy component to work on and parts availability may be a problem. There are multiple issues and to send it off to somebody will be expensive. There are other priorities, as you know.... Nevertheless, I've never had the heart to remove the Dragon from the stack...it just looks too cool....  I just keep saying someday....

I am old enough to remember when tape was king. Reel to reel tape machines are cool, sexy, and nostalgic. Back in the day no system was worth its weight without a reel to reel tape recorder. Reel to reel machines were a vital source component and the equal of turntables in a good sound system. What's not to like about lots of switches, knobs, and meters to play with? Its great fun to record mixed music tapes from vinyl or even to record live direct to tape as I do from time to time in the recording studio.
Tape is as much a part of my two channel audio experience as vinyl. With high quality recorders and tape, music sounds excellent. It is enjoyable to watch a pair of 10-1/2" reels going round and round as wonderful sound spills from your speakers. Reel to reels are still important and vital to the music we enjoy today. The old master tapes that are getting digitized for high definition playback, as well as re-mastering of old tapes from the vaults and archives of music companies, all get played on reel to reel machines. These work horses are still important and still making fabulous music. I have two reel to reel tape machines. The Revox B77 Mk II is a half track recorder. The Akai GX-636 is a quarter track recorder. Both are excellent machines in like new mint condition. I even have the original wired remote controls for both tape machines. Yep, I'm a tape head.
