Masterlu, It's not unusual for popular makers to be backordered several months... or several years either. I have a few dozen knives but have never bought one that way. Many makers have been making knives for decades so there are always 'previously owned' ones for sale.
And that means like new because virtually nobody is going to actually use them as knives. I was just reading this moring that Bill Herndan is "Retired from 50 yrs. in the photographic industry in 1998 to become full time maker." I've heard of him for years, but just looked that up this morning after buying one of his knives. John

W.W. Cronk is an example of a maker of some wid fantasy knives.
wiki - "Bill Cronk made knives from 1963 until his death in 1983 and is considered to be one of the pioneers of custom knifemaking." I didn't realize that he made knives for 'only' 20 yrs. Cronk:    Gil Hibben is another artist in that vein: wiki - "Hibben's "Fantasy Knives" have been used in over 37 films and television shows, particularly science fiction, earning him the title "Klingon Armorer" from the Star Trek franchise. Hibben currently serves as a President of the Knifemakers' Guild..." Hibben:        I'm not familiar with him, but here is something I just found by Ron Best:  I'd love to have this one. Methinks I'll (try) to buy fewer, albeit more expensive, knives in the future. Something for anyone reading about handmade knives for the first time to consider : These beautiful knives are collectibles and unlikely to fail to, at the very least, keep up with inflation...  ... Especially the ones from the established and venerated makers. I haven't searched for the number of knifemakers, but I remember reading decades ago that there were hundreds - in the U.S.

Gentlemen, (& ladies?) I noticed something today about the Bill luckett Razorback that should be arriving tomorrow (6-19-14). Notice (in post #148) that the stainless & black fiber spacers at each end of the stag have been sculpted to follow the peaks & valleys of the rough stag! I couldn't remember ever seeing that before so I looked at a full page of Google images of stag-handled knives. The vast majority did not have spacers, but there were more than a couple that did. All those were beyond the naturally rough areas of the stag. I can't imagine that this artistry is unique in the world of knives to Bill Luckett, but so far, I have never noticed it & in an admittedly cursory search, have not found other examples.
I'm kinda jazzed about that, but will know tomorrow how that actually looks. Can't wait.  John

Received the above Luckett Razorback & it's stunning. It's both just like the picture and much nicer in hand, if you know what I mean. Part of the reason, of course, is that the mirror polish in the online pics of that one were not revealed at all. - hard to photograph. The last two knives in post #149 show it a good bit, but sort of reminds me of a 'rendering'. Much nicer in hand.
