Speaker spiking question
Hi all
I'm interested in knowing what people have done when they spike their speakers. I have a bamboo wooden floor in our lounge and have recently spiked my B&W 802D2's. I now get a sense of greater detail than when previously on the rubber feet which is nice, but sometimes it seems a little bright on some recordings. To protect my floors I have used a 10 cent piece under the spikes (about the size of a quarter). I was wondering whether this was contributing to the higher top end given there is probably no real dampening? Thanks for your help! |

My Infinity RS1b mid/high towers rest on 8 spikes each. A fellow audiophile cut thick MDF to the shape of the speaker base, then he made spikes and cups (he's great on a lathe and engineering in general). Downward facing spikes sit in cups sunk flush into the MDF, under the MDF has 4 spikes that sit in larger cups on the floor. It works brilliantly, the speaker is absolutely secure on its base. He modestly puts this down to his engineering precision and the weight of the speaker.
Its the best I've ever heard the speakers so have no desire to change anything. |

Very creative - thanks for the response...I've got some improving on the lathe before I have a crack at this I'd say!

I'd recommend looking at something like Herbie's Audio Lab loudspeaker cone/spike decoupling gliders. They will both protect your floor allow you to slide your speakers to adjust them much easier when positioning them.

I cannot recommend Russ Andrews Oak Spike boots high enough. Fantastic for wooden floors, looks great, and reduces resonance compares to usual spike protectors.

I completely gave up spiking Speakers, after experiencing what Stillpoints offer.

Thanks guys - anybody had any experience using the Stillpoints with the B&W 802D2's, and if so what did you find?

Just a last check, has nobody here used stillpoints with 802 speakers?

Jamie... I have done at least 2 pairs of 802/804 with Ultra 5 feet. The audible improvements were nothing short of astonishing!

Thanks Ivan - I'm not sure how the technology actually works but there seems to be no question that it does work!
Do they still work in a rack if you already have a good isolation rack? I'm using a bamboo quadraspire rack and just wondered whether they would still materially improve SQ? |
