I purchased an Autonomic MMS-5A media server a few years ago, just a few months before McIntosh introduced their MB100 (based on the Autonomic hardware and software). For the time, it was a great choice. But Roon (which I now use) is a much better interface than the proprietary one for the Autonomic and McIntosh units.

Time does pass on...especially with technology.

Just read through the manual of the new McIntosh MS500 streamer.

I had high hopes and was willing to pay a premium price, but what a disappointing spec.

The Bryston BDP 3 (out for some time now) and the new Auralic Aries G2 and G1 leave this newest McIntosh abomination far behind.

No offense to those that own any, but there's no way I'd consider a Mc streaming product/media server/etc. I have a hard time paying a premium for what is basically a Linux machine in a fancy case, let alone Mc's less than stellar rep in the digital realm. I have been looking at Aurender's devices if I make the move to that world.

Do any of you actually listen to these streamers before commenting that they're trash? Whether you believe it or not, there's a lot more to these things than hardware/software/interface. Some of us actually worry about sound quality and synergy with an existing system.

If I am undertstanding this right, there is no way for the MS500 to wirelessly connect to my computer, there must be a network cable connection at all times. Is that right?

That is correct. It is not Wi-Fi capable.

If you want to go wireless, perhaps you could use one of the many WiFi to Ethernet adaptors available. I haven’t looked for one in a long time, but I’m sure they’re out there and faster than they used to be.
