Default Room Acoustics

We moved into a beautiful home last April. Ten acres overlooking Pyramid Peak and the Crystal Basin near Lake Tahoe. With everything the house had to offer, I was most excited about getting my very own listening space for the very first time. One of my very first projects was setting up the room. When I first fired everything up, it was clear that something was wrong. I double and triple checked all my connections and no change. It was when I got out my tape measure to dial in the speakers that I realized the problem....the room was a 15 foot square with the ceiling half that distance....a perfect half cube! Crap! I bought bass traps for every corner...very little change. Acoustic panels for each wall....nothing. Room EQ....helped a lot but something still missing.

Last weekend while Connie was shopping i lured a buddy over with a 6 pack of Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA and we moved everything up to the family room. I hooked everything up and.....MAGIC! Better than I've ever heard the PMCs...and dare I say better than I've ever heard ANY system. I had a sneaking suspicion this room was going to be good! Big, open, lots of angles, vaulted ceilings, and big exposed beams. I went from not listening to my system because of the frustration of room acoustics...now, I've got my goofy audiophile grin back once again! Please take one word of advice from me....don't allow a room to be the only detractor from your listening experience. Get out of there!

Very nice system.......so is Connie (wife I assume?) allowing everything to stay in the family room?

She doesn't have any friends that will work for beer! Ha!

She is actually okay with it...I cleaned up the rack by moving the home theater receiver out of the room, and with some cable management, things look clean!

Brent, your room looks great in your new home. I had a similar experience at my home. I wanted to make a dedicated 2 channel room out of my smaller living room but it just didn't sound as good as it did in my larger family room with a higher ceiling. I ended up making the living room a TV room and my family room a dedicated 2 channel room. It looks odd but sounds fantastic.

Beautiful room, Brent! Glad you were able to get into a better space. I had a similar experience when I flipped my room to put my speakers on the short wall and pulled them into the room 5ft. I also got rid of the TV and rack between the speakers. It is amazing what a room change can do. Unfortunately it isn't always possible.

That space looks fantastic Brent -I'm sure it sounds as fantastic.

So glad you managed to switch. Here in our new home the leaders (Missus, Daughter 1 aka Hitler, Daughter 2 aka Dominatrix) confined me to a small room in the basement. We are doing all kinds of stuff treatment wise and will continue to do so, but I can't help but think my modest setup will sound so much better upstairs in the family room.

Brent.......Great solution to a depressing problem. The sound system looks perfect in that big room. Very nice.
