I must be getting old, 76, back in 1970 I bought a used Dynaco 120 amp, a Pat3 preamp, a Standard radio Tuner and AR 3 speakers. To me they sounded great and I left them with my ex.

Don’t know if it was “high end” but Advent speakers w a Sony CD player. After that I upgraded to Boston Acoustic speakers and Sony ES CD/Tuner when I left for college. Then a long hiatus to where I am today.

The key here is "hi end". What defines the high end? Where does it start?
My first dabble was after I got out of the Navy. My friend was working at a local hifi shop and I starting with an Akai receiver, Sansui speakers and a Garrard turntable. That carried me through to the early 90's when I bought my first CD player and a Sony 333ES receiver. Followed shortly after by Paradigm Monitor 9 speakers. I started adding pieces to refine the sound as I knew it was missing something, but I couldn't seem to put a handle on it. Enter the latter part of the 2000's around 2008 or 2009 and retirement was on the horizon, so I knew I better get this figured out as my ready cash was about to dry up along with my weekly paycheck. I purchased a set of Dynaudio speakers and the sound improved immensely. Then I started replacing amps and preamps and then I added a DAC and it was coming together. Where did the "hi-end" start? There are many answers to that question. My friends have different opinions when I ask them that very question.

These were great speakers. I had the Three (the corner speakers) from the same era and loved them.

I very first high-end audio was a set of 1974 Klipsch Cornwall’s in birch wood , this was in 1980 and my old High school wrestling coach, we became very good friends as we were both of German lineage . He just retired as a history teacher and was moving out of state and he knew how much I loved his speakers. And one day I see this set of what to me at the time was the largest and badass speakers I’d ever seen. I was 15 at the time and this started my clinically diagnosed obsession with the Audio world. Lol
