New Sony 4K projectors

I saw the Sony demo of the VPL-VW665ES and the VPL-VW5000ES at CEDIA yesterday. Both projectors were shooting on a really big screen, looked like over 200 inches diagonal. Both were stunning. The 665 might work better on a smaller screen - I think they were pushing it for a lamp based projector. The 5000 uses a laser exited phosphor light source. The clips looked great, but as with any demo it was hard to judge the on/off contrast ratio of the projector. Since I am a recovering CRT addict, that's the holy grail for me personally. This latest crop of projectors is an incremental improvement over last years models - the SXRD/LCOS technology keeps improving.

JVC also was showing their latest range which also looked stunning and is a good match for the Sony dollar for dollar.

I couldn't tell from what was posted if the JVC projectors are true 4K or their e-shift technology.

Given their public statement, paraphrased below,
"4K Ultra-HD-like resolution quality"
I think it is more of the same e-shift technology.
But I didn't get a chance to confirm that with them directly.

Should one look at the difference in lumens between Sony and JVC projectors
(5000 vs 1900)? I know that specs can be meaningless sometimes but that is a
pretty drastic gap. On price they are clearly on different level, but the higher priced
JVC more or less compares with the lower end Sony.

I don't care for JVC's e-shift approach to 4K.

Nope. Here's why. The JVC and Sony projectors use the same underlying technology, LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) panels and HID bulbs. So you would expect similar lumen output from each, specmanship aside.

The spec to look for would be "projector calibrated to flat greyscale and D6500 Kelvin color temperature and filters in place to achieve Rec 709 or for 4k pj's Rec 2020.

That is how you would calibrate the projector for home use. Unless the pj has a laser light source or is the size of a small refrigerator, it won't do 5000 lumens calibrated.
