I don't prefer the rings, but they wouldn't keep me from buying a product that has them.

Respectfully, I think your comment reflects a “sore spot” that has been recently “worked through” on AA (and I, like you really hope the “cable flu” forumdemic is over and done with) but, in my opinion (and maybe my opinion only) your above comment is extending the sentiment way beyond that other issue to where it might not be applicable. I say this while telling you I was really put off by that run of very negative leaning cable postings. My comments above and those cable postings are simply not two of a kind. First— I do not believe any one currently posting here has mentioned that they have acquired an MA 12000. I am pretty sure you have not mentioned you are buying or recently bought an MA 12000. So “whose” gear am I criticizing? Are you a brand ambassador for McIntosh? If you tell me yes I will take that into account in future postings. Doing so may or may not change how I would have done my recent posting but I would certainly take it into account. I do not come here with any intent or desire to offend anybody. I have been on AA for I think about 8 years now. I have been serious, straightforward; I try to be humorous, self-deprecating, and observant. I do not want to make this mistake again so please tell me why exactly you are offended by my comment that a white ring on top of a new McIntosh unit that no one actively posting has said they own looks to me like a cup holder. I made no comment on the quality of the unit or Mc in general. I have said nothing to the effect of something like “after 20 years in high-end audio, reading dozens of research papers, and owning several components with cupholder look-alike features I can conclusively state that adding cupholders to integrated amps does not affect the sound quality.” From the first time I visited this forum after meeting Ivan by accident when I was looking for a USB cable and he invited me to give it a try it has been the “Friendly Forum” and much better than almost any place I know (online or otherwise) it has been just that. Friendly does not mean boring, unopinionated, lacking in harmless irony or sarcasm. I really associate “friendly” with “fun”, “supportive”. Like a neighborhood bar where you can drink what you want, where what you want, talk about what’s good... and bad— and yes, with the risk that occasionally someone will point out you wore two different color socks that day. Personally, I thought that run of postings about cables and power distributors that seems to have sparked this sensitivity was, to be kind, arrogant and obnoxious. I also think that if that poster had posted is opinion once, and then replied to the initial responses- once— and left it at that... that would have been fine. However, this forum is not a church or synagogue. When the postings became much more like shoving religion down your through on that subject it quickly jumped from a controversial opinion (which is okay) to overbearing and inappropriate. I’m thinking we probably agree there. I would just hope, and ask, that you try not to let the trauma of that episode of “cable flu” confuse your first impressions of other postings that are more in the category of “attempt at adding a bit of humor” (whether successful or not) with what felt was more like the attempt at “shaming” that the cable flu strings felt like they carried with it. I really like your postings (with maybe the exception of one) and respect your system and knowledge you have gained putting it together. I took the time to write this long response with the hope that it helps prevent any lingering effects of that virus (cable flu) from permeating and infecting other parts and strings in this forum with negativity. I hope you take my response in the friendly and respectful spirit in which it was intended. And heck, wouldn’t you like to have 4- MA 12000 on your boat? With a bunch of JL Audio marine speakers? How great would that sound? Respectfully, ‘ Robert

I would need to see the new McAmp designs in the flesh to form an opinion on whether they are rings, cup holders, needless bling or an okay design feature.
But for what it’s worth, I have no issue with anyone voicing their opinion. It is after all what seems to start good discussions although it can however start us down the path to more heated and less useful discussions. Crap, I have to go fix my socks! The forum is, for the most part, self moderating. If we get out of hand there is ‘you know who’ to clean things up.

McIntosh was not sure you would recognize the brand so they had to circle the name.

You probably meant me? I did voice my opinion on some cable issues that have been bothering me recently which was not received well by some. Let me just clarify a few things. I've auditioned, courtesy of many local dealers, borrowed, (from the cable company) and have paid my dues with cables. I've had cable looms at home exceeding $40k at once for evaluation. I own various brands cables, power cords and certainly do not use a zip cord. My dedicated room build out some years back saw Transparent cables exceeding the cost of a new car. However, over the 30 plus years of being in the hobby, I've also noticed quite a bit of exaggerated claims that are repeated over and over which I do not necessarily agree with from direct experience. I know priorities and steps which are proven and how to obtain good sound, even on a budget. Cables absolutely can make a difference, if they are designed in specific way to alter the signal and some really are with their networks built in to the cables. I am using such speaker cables myself and love their smooth, hash and grain free response. Having said that, I am done talking cables. It really does not matter to me who spends their money on what and what they hear in their own system. You are correct, this is not a church or a synagogue and I am not the Preacher or a Rabbi to guide the flock. Voicing my opinion on cables and power cords was/is pointless as people still will believe what they believe and so be it. It is just a hobby after all and everyone should feel good about spending their money on whatever makes them happy. So, yes, the cable pandemic is over because this really is a friendly forum. We do tend to self moderate well and have over the years. If everyone just exercises a bit of patience and respect towards each other when things go a bit sideways and understands that sometimes people may be having a bad day as the last year has not been easy on most, it all blows over without too much drama. Also, try not to be a hypocrite, it is OK for you to voice your opinion and poke fun at anything you like but you do not want to hear opinions on cables on an audio forum? I personally never get upset at any opinions. Whatever they may be is fine with me. At the end of the day, chances are, I will still buy and enjoy whatever I think is best for me regardless of what Joe, John or Peter has to say about it. |
