The E Silent PC - July 2013 Edition - Doin' It Right...

As some have already read in the thread HERE, Ernie is the latest to dive into serious digital playback. He was kind enough to permit me to go over the basics of his build process. So, without further adieu: the most recent iteration of the eSilentPC and NAS.

As I've professed numerous times, separating the audio database to one central, high-speed, and well-cooled unit gives such a level of functionality that is near difficult to beat. And given the varied options out there today, you can get something that looks good, performs well, and fits even into modest budgets. Additionally, these solutions are fully scalable. The beauty of the PC/NAS/Server concept is that you build it to fit your needs, and when your needs grow, you can quickly grow the system(s) to suit you. Whether you want to add all the SoTM stuff, have dual 8-bay NAS', or even a full domain controller to manage your network, you won't have any problem doing so. This is not the case with so many other proprietary products out there, even ones that are unbelievably expensive (or if they are, they charge you a few kidneys).

The SilentPC:
The system uses a Streacom FC5 EVO with a BD-RE slot-load, 150w PicoPSU, 35w Intel Ivy Bridge processor, 128gb SSD, and 8gb of high speed, low latency, low voltage RAM. Each part was chosen for the specific purpose of delivering speed but with the lowest power consumption. Considering a passive build, heat is a major factor, and I want everything to run cool as a cucumber. When, during normal operations, the CPU is ranging from 32-34C, you are in very good shape.

The NAS:
Good ol' Synology - it's tough to beat their + line, and this unit was no exception. Add 2x 3TB drives in a RAID1 config, and you're set to go. And when the initialization takes the better part of 20 hours (including sector-by-sector check), don't fret. It really does take that long.

What can I say? It is blazing fast (power button to desktop in ~10sec, incl BIOS POST), absolutely dead silent (except for when ripping a CD obviously). Using Win7Pro x64, JRiver MC18 through WASAPI and configured for bitperfect output. System stability, usability and elegance are my top priorities for all my clients - this one delivers and then some.

From the machined solid aluminum construction of the Streacom to it being barely luke warm to the touch, to using whatever device you want to control the system (from iPad/iPhone, Droid/Tab mouse and keyboard apps, to Gizmo, to JRemote), a full solution is delivered. Want to push DoP somewhere? No problem. Want to push some hi-rez FLAC your Sonos Connect:AMP on your patio from your iPad with cigar and scotch in hand? No problem. I don't just ship you boxes and leave you on your own... it is a paramount interest to make sure you know how to use your new toy!

And the sound quality? Spectacular.

The audible smile of a man on the phone while I am remotely configuring and training them on their new toy(s) as they hear it and get to play it for the first time is fulfilling. Ya'll really turn into little kids.

So what are the outputs from this box? I'm curious about connectivity to my streamer. I assume it has Ethernet capabilities, correct?

I use a streamer that selects files via Ethernet cable adn the network from my server and runs them to the DAC. The streamer uses either AES/EBU, SPDIF Coax or optical.

RJ45 for GigE (Ethernet) - If you require WiFi that is as easy as adding a USB WiFi adapter, even top notch ones don't cost more than $75 or so... (cheapest ones ~$10). I do recommend a hardwire connection, though.

Several USB 2.0 & 3.0 (optional SoTM USB 3.0 card if you so desire, or an outboard USB-to-SPDIF converter like a Hiface, Bryston, or BADA if your DAC has no USB input)

HDMI, DVI, HD15/D-Sub

There are also Toslink and Multichannel analog outs, but those I disable.

There are also 2 front/right-side USB ports (stock 2.0, but can be 3.0 at client request), so plugging in a wireless keyboard/mouse or thumb drive is very, very easy.

If the streamer is your Sonos, you'll likely ditch that in favor of this (JRiver control and push to other DLNA devices, including you Sonos is top of the chain).

My streamer is a SimAudio Moon MiND 180 so I can handle the larger, hi res, files. I control it through an iPad. All I really need is for the streamer to "see" the ethernet and the music server. I assume this is will work on a UPNP setup?

I just want to isolate the music from the rest of the high traffic files in the current server and have a dedicated box for about 50+ GB of music. Of course, 2 - 3TB drives in a RAID1configuration will work!

That's cool...thx for sharing! I especially dig the chassis.

BTW, did you ever consider the Haswell processors? They run even cooler, have built-in voltage regulators, and bypass audio so it accesses the hardware directly.

Don't forget to add an UPS for yor NAS with an USB port and support for Synology (in case of power failure you will not lose you data ... which can happen with Synology and no UPS; the so called inteligent UPS can switch off the NAS when connected via the USB).

Other than that a great choice - I also have the Synology (212j) with dual 3TB Red HDDs.
