You're right, I think it was late when I was posting it.

I meant, the midrange driver is isolated in the turbine head.

It is also isolated in its own chamber in the 804. The big difference is what the rear radiation sees and what the front radiation sees.

It's not a turbine head, it's just isolated - is it not?

The front and rear diffraction is a big difference, yep I agree.

And the bass woofers and location of port.

My demo of the 804D3 side by side to 803D3, the 804D3 had less bass and sounded brighter and it did not disappear as well. Sounded like a speaker that was localizable.

The dimensions of the box on the 803D'3 are: 50" tall, 26.5 X 19.5.
It has a hard base that shipping straps go around and it's a little wider by about an inch.
So base is 27.5 X 20.5.

Don't these use the exact same tweeter? Is it actually brighter or is it because the 804 doesn't have the bass to counter the tweeter, which makes the speaker on the higher end of the frequency side?

btw, does it bug anyone else that Magnolia carries B&W, McIntosh, etc...? I kind of liked going into high end privately owned shops vs a big box store that 15 year olds are trying to sell you high end gear. Some of the stuff I hear them say just makes me shake my head. I guess it is good for the manufacture as I am sure they get much more exposure.

Also to add, I think the 803 is a speaker that is the cut off where I could get away with not using a sub for music, I still think the 804 needs a sub

Hi rodH,

I can share a little perspective from the other side of the fence. The Great Recession wiped out 50% of our dealer base in North America, so the option to stay with independents exclusively was no longer an option. The venue for selling brands like ours is in a store and not online (headphones are a bit different.)

Like any big company, the quality of sales people at Magnolia varies widely. Some stores are filled with pros who know their craft (which is reflected in their sales,) and some not so much. However, when I visit independents, I can't say they are uniformly better. If I had a dollar for every independent that I've visited with disinterested staff, dirty stores and bad sound, I could afford that bottle of Pappy I saw earlier this week.

Regards,

Patrick
B&W Group North America

It is true there are bad independents as well as good ones. However, with an independent at least you have the possibility of good or great sound. I have never been in a magnolia that made good sound - they basically can't - all the ones I've visited have bad fundamentals - meaning bad sounding rooms. If the room is bad - it is basically over before it began.
