Default What other McIntosh mono blocks were there before the MC501?

Hi there,

Were there other McIntosh mono blocks before the MC501? Can you recommend a specific model?

Thank you!

I'm very happy with my MC1201's.

There are MC1000's just before that...

of course there are the vintage amps such as MC50, MC100, MC30, MC60, MC75, MC3500

Don't forget the MC40. There are also some really old mono amps from the 50s like the 15W-1, 50W-1, and MI200.

Anything before the MC1000 is getting into vintage stuff from the 50s and 60s which is not really a fair comparison with the MC501s. There are not many modern McIntosh mono blocks, the MC501s are the smallest of the bunch (except the tube MC2301). The MC1000 and MC1201 came right before the MC501 and the MC2KW, MC1.2KW and MC2301 came right after the MC501.

I have heard MC50s, I really liked them. The MC50s have a smooth relaxed sound that makes beautiful music. If a 30-40 year old 50 watt amp is acceptable to you, I recommend the MC50s.

Does running most any of the stereo amps in bridged mode count as a monobloc?

Silly me, I forgot one more set of modern mono blocks. It's the amps I'm using, the new MC75s from the 60th anniversary set. I believe the MC75 is the newest mono block available.
