Serge, if you do a search for "Sennheiser HD650 Love" on SBAF, you will find a comprehensive compendium on the HD650. Pretty interesting reading.

Serge, what color screens are your HD600s? Black or silver? There's an interesting thread on SBAF entitled "Sennheiser HD6** Analysis" that seems to indicate that the black screen HD600s have some nice qualities. (FWIW, mine are an older black screen pair). This is a measurements thread in preparation for the arrival of the new HD660.

Black. Was not aware of silver screened HD600? Wonder what the difference would be? Different batches or sub models?

Oh, I see what you are talking about Stephen. The membrane screen. Yes, my HD600 is silver since I bought my second pair of HD600 about a year and a half ago. I bought the older HD600 about 10 years ago at least. I don't have the originals anymore.

HD600 has been around since 1997.

Yeah, thanks, Serge. Marvey at SBAF was using a dark membrane HD600s for comparison testing and it appeared it was outperforming the HD650 in a couple of areas.

Yep, 20 years for the HD600s. Amazing.

I used my original pair of HD600 with Brockspier EARMAX and then EARMAX PRO. Triode/OTL. It is a sound I remember well having used them for 6 years every night.

Once the Schiit Valhalla 2 arrives, I should be able to tell just from memory if there is a significant difference. Unless of course the EARMAX and Valhalla are significantly different themselves.

I can tell you that the bass is tighter and punchier, the HD650 still has better grip on the bottom, old or new version of HD600. Mids are very similar and the HD650 sound a bit more airy up top. Not a huge difference and I like Sennheiser's approach, evolutionary rather than revolutionary design changes with the newer models. 20 years is a looong time for an audio component.

The track "Hide and Seek" from the Ramsey Lewis Trio on their "Time Flies" album easily brings out the difference in bass response and puts things into perspective just like that.
