No, before Shunyata I was using Cardas power cables. I am however getting ready for a possible change as I've sold my Shunyata Talos and am replacing it with a PS Audio P5 which actually arrived today. So one thing I have considered was moving over to Tara Lab's power cables. It's not that I think the Shunyata units or poor performers or anything just always wanted to try the Tara PC's. Of course I could also go the route of running Shunyata IC and speaker cables.

So ........ my wiring to the receptacle is 10 gauge, please explain how the last couple of feet going to 8 gauge is going to make a difference ?? and for Gods sakes for all I know the internal wiring of the amp is probably only 10 or even 12 !

I'll be very interested in your impressions of the PS Audio P5, because back in 2011 or thereabouts, I borrowed one of the very large and heavy Purepower AC regenerators (1500 or 2000, I can't remember), and it was notably outperformed by my entry-level 2010-era Shunyata Hydra 4 for sound quality.

Early on when I was running a McIntosh C220, MC240 combo I has a PS Audio AV3000. That combo sounded very good. I went that route as the AV3000 allowed me a switched outlet I used to turn on the MC240 after the C220 powered up. When I want to the Luxman I picked up a used Hydra-8 after reading your comments about it. Later I went to the Talos. The Shunyata's did outperform the AV3000 but not by a huge margin from what I remember. I had been looking to change/upgrade from the Talos and thought I'd give PS Audio another shot. Would have gone with a P10 but with my small system I think that would have been overkill. Yeah I know, can't believe I just typed that, LOL. So I contacted Ivan and order a P5 which I will likely set up tomorrow. I'll let you all know my opinion. It should be pretty good out of the box as it's had at least a three day burn in.

Cool. Looking forward to your impressions. Thanks!

We've been posting very detailed explanations here for some years now and there is a volume of information contained in past threads that address this and other "last few feet" concerns. I'll try and give the shorter, combined answer. For more in depth answers, you will find any number of Caelin's posts illuminating on this and related topics.

#1, the power cord represents an extension of the primary winding within the component power supply, so from the component's perspective, a power cord represents the first few feet a component "sees", not the last few feet. The further you get from electronic's power supplies, the less the condition or gauge of wire matters.

#2. Impulse current doesn't behave like the favorite analogy-- water. The better analogy would be to say instantaneous current is analogous to highly compressed forced air. It will expand and contract on-a-dime(micro-seconds). This means transitions from small to larger gauge are, well, instantaneous.

#3. We have video-taped measurement and Oscilloscope readings showing up to a 50% reduction in impulse current delivery from the wall to a component when comparing a stock-power cord to an inexpensive after-market model with crimped/soldered connections and better gauge. (see link)

#4. All this is to say that we have provided empirical corroboration to what people have been "hearing" for years. I don't see anything I've written here as controversial or really, debatable. The mere accumulation of anecdotal evidence is overwhelming. We've added measurement to support why people have shared the experiences they have. Here is a short, two-three minute video with straightforward measurement using an ASCC tester-- a common electrician's tool.

The wealth of measurements, science and posted, simple english explanations don't leave a lot to question. If you look at this from a broad perspective, this explains the very existence and success of after-market electrical products. Don't miss the outlet comparison at the end. It's fairly self-evident.

The measurement demo starts at 1:00 m mark.

yep, pretty straight forward example of Ohm's law at work ......... I suspect if the gauge of the wire in the 'stock' black cord were the same so would the current reading have been.

the Shunyata receptacle is impressive, as it should be for $95 ! given the comparison though against a garden variety $2 piece from Home Depot I wonder what the difference would be compared to a 'Hospital Grade' Leviton at 1/5 the price ?
