Oh, I do hope it will be bench tested to the factory standard once again.
Right now I use this pre amp with Simaudio Moon W7M. And I am pretty sure
that once I tried Ref 250, I will be missing Moon's power and speed, amd trouble free operation.

You were unlucky. I have owned ARC preamplifiers for tens of years and never had a blowing capacitor problem. I am sure that your dealer will test the preamplifier, but it would not be needed - this capacitor is in a position of the circuit that can not affect performance of other components.

BTW, remember to change the 6550C tubes at 2000 hours. I forgot about it and my preamplifier started sounding less dynamic at around 2700 hours. When I measured the tubes I found that one of the 6500C had a too low transconductance. I changed them and my preamplifier was again at its best!

Hope the Ref40 comes out of repair service soon and without troubles again krub, K.Toga. My set is only about 200 hours, no problem so far.

However, one of my racks has only 5 inches space above the pream unit, 1 inch less than the 6" minimum recommeded by the manual. I'm placing the PS unit on the top shelf of another rack. Not sure which one really generate more heat. There are more tubes inside the preamp unit, albeit smaller than those in the PS. ????

If this setup is too risky, maybe I should use my another preamp meanwhile waiting for new room to finish (& new speakers to arrive) late this year.

Hi klao, while I have the required clearance between racks, the ps of the ref 40 generates a lot of heat, significantly more than the main control unit, primarily because of the 2 6550 regulator tubes. For this reason I likewise relocated the ps unit to the top of the rack where I feel it gets the proper ventilation.

K Klao,

I believe there is not much different much between 5 or 6 inch of ventilation space.
My ref 40 are on open shelf, however, so that I can do open-top sometimes.

Mine has 1500 hours now and definitely will replace those 6550c soon.
Now using loan Mcintosh C45 as pre amp and I feel much better dynamic and bass
Also very clean treble too. But still, tube sound is more musical to my ears.

K Klao, may I open new topic at General speakers forum. Please follow to help
Me answer some questions regarding Magico. Thanks krup.

toga

Just got a call that repair has been completed, they replaced all 5 white caps on that channel as the
other 4 were smoked too. Hope the right and left ch. sound matched as on right ch they put all new
caps while on L ch. those caps are 1500 hours.

Many thanks for Dafos and TOGA. Now I'm using the other preamp (just to be on a safe-side) while waiting for the new speakers to arrive and new room finished.

K.TOGA, I did respond to your post re. Magico. Keep us posted on how your pre works after receiving it back. Cheers.
