I was lucky to have the BDA-3 for 2 days in my system last week. Amazing My new 601s playing with my c2200 and Cary Audio SLP-05 preamp! Amazing DAC!! About as good as it gets!

Hello,

I see Volumio is now supporting native DSD via USB to supported DACs (not using DoP). When trying this out on my BDA-3, it doesn't work (it converts to PCM 352Khz). When using DoP mode I get the green DSD light as expected.

I know that DoP at the end of the day is the same as native DSD to the DAC, but I was hoping this update would allow us to illuminate the elusive orange DSD light.

I am guessing the support may not be there on the BDA-3 side? James, can you comment? Is a firmware update possibly needed to support this?

Hi

I use Foobar 2000 and JRiver and they both output DSD Native to the BDA-3 DAC.

What (product) hardware are you using to output your files to the BDA3?

It's hard to know how Volumio implemented native DSD. If they're using a recent build of xmos-native-dsd, the BDA-3 is supported. If they're using an old build or a fork of an older build, they will need to update to include the BDA-3, but support exists from our end.

Hi guys, thanks for the response. I am using Volumio on a rasberry pi 2b with USB to the DAC.

Had a chat with Chris Rice via email today and he thinks that while Volumio seems to support the correct MPD and ALSA versions, the kernel may be lacking the necessary specific support for the BDA-3 USB/Product ID needed to make it work properly. I am raising the same question on the Volumio forums to see if a dev can comment.

I actually signed up 3 1/2 years ago but am shocked that this was my first post.
What's that called.......lurking, I think.

Had the BDA3 in my system for a brief demo a few months back. The first piece of electronic gear I've ever had where I knew within a very short time, minutes, that "I must have this". So not really surprised all these reviewers are keeping them.
It does so many little things right.
Compared to my Denon 3930 the sound stage is wider and deeper.
Seems quieter, smoother, more relaxed.
And a slight (digital) edge is gone.
These numerous incremental improvements add-up to a big difference.

Will be getting one once the funds are there.

+1 for the Bryston BDA-3. I am very, very pleased with mine ... and pleased with the deal Ivan offered me on it, too.

Ok, please don't shoot me for this, but: One source I'm using with the Bryston is a Wadia 171i transport, which is an iPod dock with a digital out. The SQ with this source through the Bryston is simply unbelievable! Of course, the SQ is limited by the inherent limitations of the mp3 format itself. But, the same mp3 files sound better through the Bryston than they have with other DACs I have tried.

Why MP3? Rip the music to ALAC aka M4A, which is a lossless format and it’s compatible with all apple products. Or if you have an iPhone/iPad get the Vox player. It’ll play FLAC on you iDevice

Why mp3? Because I have some mp3 files. I also have FLAC files, m4a files, LPs, CDs, reel-to-reels, cassettes ... I've been an audiophile for a long time. I have music in a lot of different formats. I even have a few broadcast carts laying around.

Thankfully, I always managed to avoid 8-track cartridges - an awful format. <shudder>

I knew when I posted the original comment here that I shouldn't have admitted to having any mp3 files. Hence my comment:
