I have spent a good deal of time listening to all the filter settings and I always come back to S_DLY2. It just sounds the most natural to my ears. The choice of native, 2x or 4x oversampling seems to come down to the quality and/or brightness of the recording. On the plus side, oversampling can make a good recording sound more holographic and lifelike. On the minus side, it can sometimes expose information in old recordings that you don't want to hear and make bright recordings sound brighter.

Best,
Ken
Ken,
I agree. I prefer the SLY_2 slow delay setting, and use the 4x oversampling as my default sampling setting and have not spent a lot of time playing around with the settings with different recordings. Your point about some recordings sounding too bright echoes my experience. Some great performances, but less-than-perfect older recordings are staying on the shelf as I reach for pristine recordings that show off the abilities of my new system. My new system is very revealing, and I know I'll tire of the steady diet of the perfect, and want to visit my older performances of classical, jazz and rock, but I'm going to have to find a way to set my system up to best advantage for that type of use. My older system may have been ultimately less capable, but it was generally easier to live with. I'm not complaining, just saying that there is a learning curve there that I need to address. Ted.

I'm sure you are aware of the break-in requirements of these players. I used primarily the Esoteric disc, but substituted quality classical, big band jazz and rock recordings to exercise the system. I ran both decks 24/7 until they reached 500 hours on Red Book and another 250 hours on DSD. How many hours do you have on yours? I heard major improvements in openness and tone quality at approximately 175 and 275-300 hours respectively on Red Book and a little later, approximately 200 hours for the first real improvement in the dsd playback. It takes time, but like the song says, "What a Difference a Day Makes!" Ted.

LOL...I've had mine on constantly since I got it, but that's maybe 100-120 hours so far?

Mine didn't come with a disc. I thought they did? I am just leaving my computer run through USB on repeat. I did run a sacd through it for a day on repeat. I'll alternate.

My ARC gear only has around 200 hours on it (I don't leave it on continually). Have had it for a month and a half or so.

So yeah, I have heard some differences in quality but I don't know what is breaking in at what rate

My situation as well - breaking in an entire new system along with the player. I'm not sure, but I'd bet you need to be breaking in the unit playing rather than streaming since there is more system involved in the former. Esoteric used to include the disc with the K-03 and K-01 players, at least. My K-03 came with the disc, but my K-01 did not, so I used the disc from the K-03 on the K-01. I'm sure they are available from Esoteric. Looks like you have a fine new system. Good luck and happy listening. Ted.

Marc... maybe the disc was lost in the flimsy packaging.

Just let me know if you can't locate it.

They could have packed a live human baby in there and it would have arrived in perfect condition.

Hmm, you believe it should be there? I'm almost certain it wasn't, but I will look again.

I also didn't receive the break-in disc with the K-01.

Hi Ted,

The less-than-perfect older recordings will sound much better if you play them on S_DLY2 with Native sampling. You can pull them down off the shelf now.

Best,
Ken
