Maybe I overdid it.
Here is my new rack before staining. I've always been a "make it heavy duty" type, but Mein Gott, this thing is massive. Barring intense seismic activity, it's not going to move much. I hope it doesn't look ridiculous when finished and installed in the listening room. The idea was to make it sort of industrial chic to match the Audio Research components. My wife rolls her eyes.
Kind of hard to see, but it's all oak butcher block construction, including the legs, with four big hoggy screws per side on each shelf hidden by buttons, in addition to the glued dado joints. The woodworker did a nice job on it, but was glad to get it out of his shop--I'm sure moving and constructing the beast was a never-again experience for him. I'm going to get a taste of that when I do the Danish oil finish--a stout nephew will help wrestle it around. Hopefully it will be done and in use by November.

You shouldn't have to check the weight of a new component to decide if it is OK to install.

Clarifixer.......The new rack looks fantastic. I would be proud to own one just like it. As for your wife, she obviously doesn't have a clue how much money you have saved the family by doing it yourself. Great job.

I had the same reaction the first time I saw my custom media console. I kept up'ing all of the measurements to make sure it was spacious and sturdy enough to fit hundreds of points of large and heavy gear. When it finally arrived it took me by surprise and at first I did think it looked ridiculous. A couple months later and I'm now completely used to it.
I think it looks great. Can't wait to see it stained. |
