I'll try to look on the bright side and use it as extra incentive to try just a little bit harder to make sure my transactions won't involve a return.

I try and avoid using PP. I’d rather take the 2.9% and take the risk that our collective integrity is worth more than the transaction at hand. I do like the convenience though.

I love PayPal from the consumer aspect, and use it whenever available..............no need filling in credit card info, ease of us, fast, security, purchase history.

I hate how PayPal treats merchants like numbers and doesn't care about them.

The payment transaction was successful even if the item sale was not. Some (many?) merchants, dealers, sellers that accept PP often pass the PP fee on to the seller - if you want to pay with PP it will cost you 3% or whatever.

Not a perfect analogy but most sellers see shipping fees as part of the cost of doing business independent from the item cost, they ask buyers to pay for shipping and don't refund original shipping fees for returned items (unless they sent a defective or wrong item, etc.) PP is a sunk cost. If merchants don't want to absorb the PP fee cost - just like they don't want to pay for shipping on returns - they're free to reduce the cost of the refund. Banks nor merchants typically won't return wire transfer fees if the item is returned.

Of course you don't have to like it. :-)
I must respectfully disagree with at least part of your statement. Paypal is a transaction facilitator in that they accomplish a secure transfer of payment from buyer to seller. But they offer a concurrent service to the buyer, they also offer guarantees and buyer protection.

It may be reasonable for them to retain some portion of their fee as they have accomplished their task of securely transferring payment from the buyer to the seller, actually two transfers in the case of a refund but they no longer have to provide the buyer protections and should refund that portion of the fees.

They may inadvertently motivate more people to illicitly engage in "Friends and Family" transfers for transactions that are actually sales of goods or services, something I don't do.

Correct, people and "Merchants" should not abuse "Friends and Family".

I see many people doing it here, and the goN.

Paypal once a very good idea, becomes progressively worse with each passing day. Reminds me of ebay.

Don't you just love greedy firms like PayPal?

I sell/buy on Audiogon and USAudiomart and I'm not a merchant. If the seller/buyer has a great feedback I sometimes use "Friends and Family". There is no reason I shouldn't...again I'm not a merchant.

Yep.......you are screwing and taking advantage of the system. It's intention is not for the sale of goods.

Eventually "Friends and Family" at no charge will go away.

Final pricing is always about what one individual is willing to pay, and knowing about the 3%.

Advertising a 3% added fee by the seller is also a turn off for me, since pricing is negotiable anyway.

Ron,
I think maybe it has. The last time I used F&F as a ‘money sender’ I was charged for the privilege. Not sure of the %.
