I've been enjoying this superbly played and recorded SACD of Louis Couperin harpsichord music. My only issue in the mean-tempered tuning--sounds a bit out of tune and takes some getting used to!

Musica Antiqua Köln, Reinhard Goebel

This set is a great find and just a plain delight to hear. Johann David Heinichen was a contemporary of Bach and one of an important group of musicians employed by the Dresden court during the 1720s and 1730s.

Here is quote from a Gramophone review:
"Your attention will be held from start to finish. Much of the credit for this must go to Reinhard Goebel and his impeccably drilled Musica Antiqua Köln. Some of these pieces might well seem less entertaining in the hands of less imaginative musicians and it would be untruthful to claim that everything is of uniform interest. Each concerto fields its own distinctive wind group drawing variously upon recorders, flutes, oboes, bassoons and horns, the latter always in pairs, in addition to concertante parts in many of them for one or more violins and cellos. There's little need to say more."

Gramophone Awards 1993, Baroque Category

The 1992 Archiv recording is superb capturing the bloom of this enchanting Baroque music and the acoustic space where it was performed. This is one of my favorite discs. I promise you will like it after one hearing. No acquired taste kind of music these Dresden Concerti.
I'm enjoying this magnificent music again. If you have not heard this, I recommend you get this two-disc set. It's really, really good

Default Schubert: The Symphonies

I just got this set from Presto Classical...

Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 (Complete)
Grand Duo Sonata in C major, D812, orch. Joseph Joachim
Rosamunde, D797: Overture
The Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Claudio Abbado

Playing disc #1 of 5 which includes Symphony No. 1 in D major, D82 and Symphony No. 2 in B flat major, D125

Vivacious playing from the youthful Chamber Orchestra of Europe directed by Abbado in top form, this is one of his greatest recording legacies. The recorded sound is warm and very satisfying. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

plus this Chandos SACD

A wonderful box set !!!!!

The Leopold Stokowski Stereo Collection 1954 - 1975

A 14 disc RCA CD box set

Listening to CD # 8 - Dvorak Symphony No. 9 "From the New World", Smetana - The Moldau.

Stokowski had the unique talent of making any music sound more exciting and listenable than almost any other conductor, and I don't think I know of another "New World" that gets the juices flowing as well as does this Stokowski rendition.

Listening to . . . A remarkably good sounding record (LP)

Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops - Capriccio Italien, Capriccio Espagnol

Limited Edition Direct to Disc Recording by Crystal Clear Records
Recorded live at Boston Symphony Hall, November 1, 1977

Fiedler and his gang could play some serious stuff when they wanted to . . and this is a really good example of them at their best - Also, this is a very well recorded and well produced record.

Listening to . . . Dvořák Cello Concerto

Gregor Piatigorsky - Cello
Boston Symphony Orchestra - Charles Munch, Conductor

An RCA Living Stereo LP, recorded in 1961 (And, it is available on SACD)

Typical of the early RCA Living Stereo Shaded Dogs - the sound is outstanding - as is the performance.

I particularly like this music and this is an excellent addition to anyone's collection.

Eliot Fisk transcribed this mammoth (75 minute) set of variations originally written for solo violin. He has to do things that seem scarcely possible on the guitar (probably no picnic for the violinist, either...). Amazing stuff, both musically and technically.

Upon recommendation friend Bart . . . The UPS man brought this marvelous SACD recording yesterday, and I'm playing it now.

Thanks for the glowing report Bart! I do agree -

The performance is impeccable and perfectly recorded.
