Default Any diabetics?

A couple of weeks ago my doctor had me get a complete blood work up done. The results of which showed a high blood glucose level, “diabetes level” is how my doctor described it. He prescribed meds and said that I should be able to control my blood sugar with the oral meds and watching my diet. Unfortunately I have a sweet tooth so cutting out sugar will be tough, but not as tough as cutting out RICE! I am of Japanese heritage and rice is built into my culinary DNA.

I’ve always been able to eat pretty much what I want...this is going to be tough.

Default Any diabetics?

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 20 years ago so I know a little about that.

Based on what you said the doc prescribed, I assume you have Type 2 non-insulin dependent diabetes.

My suggestion is to seek out a dietician for help on your diet and to educate you on how your body processes different foods and finally perhaps find a different doctor that is a little more precise than ‘diabetes level’ sugar levels.

Type I is by definition insulin requiring and almost always juvenile onset.

Good luck. Exercise plays a huge role in managing this.

Many physicians will limit themselves to prescribing a medication that treats the symptoms but not the cause.
I suggest that you try and educate yourself about your condition and ways of addressing the cause of the problem.

Here is a good book to get you started:

A couple of years ago my blood sugar was high and my doctor told me I was “pre-diabetic.” I got things under control with increased exercise and diet. As Craig said, talk to a dietician, and set yourself some daily goals. I’ve found apps like LoseIt and MyFitnessPal very helpful. You can set daily goals for sugar, calories and other nutrients, enter what you eat and easily see where you stand. Also if you don’t already, read labels religiously at the grocery store. Sometimes it’s a matter of choosing something different or switching brands rather than abstaining. Good luck.

Low carbohydrate diet . If your overweight lose weight. Diabetes can lead to heart disease and associated with silent Heart attacks, kidney failure, peripheral vascular disease. A little self control with your diet may save your life

Type two here. Diagnosed in 2007. Was on insulin until 2011 when I discovered the Paleo diet. Low carb sort of like the Atkins diet. Exercise at the gym 6 days a week and now I'm off all medication. Still test my blood sugar twice a day but type two diabetes can almost be reversed. My blood sugar will always be higher than a non diabetic, but it's in the comfort zone!
